I guess 2 take aways from that-they are taking animal welfare SERIOUSLY, and 2, they let him finish so he was OK.
@Danvers A course will have multiple āpreferred stopping fencesā where the fence judges will be asked to stop horses if there is a problem on the course ahead, such as a fall or a Fence needing repair. Generally these are āeasierā fences e.g. not water or a combination. However, it isnāt always possible to use them. If a horse is showing blood, control may ask for that horse to be stopped at any fence. In fact Julia Newton was stopped for blood at the same fence as Boyd Martin and she was eliminated there. IMO the stop helped Martin because his horse had looked to be tiring but it picked up again after the pause.
No time is lost during a hold because the fence judges will be timing each horse over their fence. The period of the hold is deducted from the time at completion.
Burghley, I thought, used set stopping points, between fences, in the past. However, I could be wrong.
Thank you, for taking the time to educate me.
are you new to eventing?
Yes! - I ride dressage - early in my riding, I rode hunter jumper- donāt know the rules and details of x country, and of lots of things, I am grateful, and appreciate all the time my fellow CoTH pals take to explain things- thank you all!
I havenāt ridden for many years. I had my horse for 29 years, never sick or sorry. She has been gone for 20 years. So I sit here at the keyboard watching the big ones. My first exposure was the world championships in 78 in Kentucky. I knew nothing about eventing. I knew they ran and jumped, but that was it. I had never walked a course or anything. I live vicariously thru CoTH. If you have any general questions, ask away. I will be as helpful as I can.
Burghley is THE biggest event in the world. Burghley first Badminton second Kentucky third and the rest kind of behind those three. To get around that one is a great acomplishment.
Overall, I really liked the course. I thought for the most part it asked good questions, most falls were riders just getting popped off. I do like that it was so influential, but most of the horses I saw still looked happy when they finished. Granted I didnāt get to watch all of it (catching up after falling asleep partway through then studying), hopefully the rest of the field was like that.
Derek usually designs nice safe courses. There was only one fall, and I believe that horse was able to walk off.
No update yet on Toledo has me very worried
ARGH, we have safe helmets for a reason. That really grates.
Boyd did it after one of his tests, too. The hell? I just donāt get it.
