Gosh you guys are slow! Something major happened yesterday and you are still talking about cats? The first of possibly many shoes has dropped.
That was totally uncalled for and insensitive, Laurie. I didn’t know anything had happened at Penn until this morning, but even if I did, YES, we’re talking about cats. Geesh, it was just a couple posts. Apparently some of us think cats’ lives are important, too. What a shame you so easily blow off that concern as well as the important work Susan’s doing.
I’ll keep you and your kitties in my thoughts and prayers, Susan.
This was never the right place to talk about cats in need anyway. The bulk of the forum members don’t look at this forum let alone this thread. And it used to be the place people could go to for breaking news so I was pointing out that that obviously isn’t the case anymore. If you want to place the cats put them in the giveaways forum like everybody else does. That is where people go when they are actually looking for something. Not buried 2400 posts into an unrelated thread.
Catfight! Sorry, just couldn’t resist…Back to the drama that is Penn National.
Gill’s “livelihood”? WTH, he’s a scamming mortgage lender by trade. Race horses are just an aside for him to get hidden tax breaks and to scam more people.
Perhaps the number of his horses breaking down & the danger he put everyone in should be brought to the attention of the judge.

Didn’t you know you could make a ton of money claiming and dropping cripples for a living?
Not to meniton the last few hundred dollars you can eek out for the trip to Canada…

I think they’ve got a smart, fair judge who understands horses. It is on the lawyers to get the right evidence in front of her.
Great work, Susan. As well as horse victims, cats and other animals are victims too.
I love Dick Hertz!
Do not rely on lawyers to do the research and the work. Send letters to the lawyers and to the judge. They do read them. (I was a federal law clerk and saw “my” judge reading letters, and saw judges in superior court later reading letters.)
Write and set out in order the events. Do not be emotional or reactionary. Be rational and calm and tell all that you know to the lawyers and to the judge. And to the TV stations and newspapers.
Adamo claims another at Philly today…

Don’t misquote me. I didn’t say to generally rely on lawyers & judges. I said THIS judge was smart & fair & knows what she is doing.
And I respectfully disagree with your advice to lobby a judge on how you want a case to be decided, but that’s also just my opinion, based on how “my” judges would have felt about it.
Well perhaps each court is different or in different regions of the country but it sounds like C & C is just sharing from her experiences in the courts.
C & C, how many years were you doing this kind of work? How many parts of the country did you work in the courts?
I know that you can’t count on the reaction from each judge, they are all individuals but I do remember one case for certain where an informative letter went to the judge and he removed the TRO instead of making it permanent because the letter contained facts that were otherwise not in evidence. The judge had been lied to and the letter proved it. It was a slam dunk after that.

I haven’t been stabled at Penn in 11 years so I was waiting for the locals to chime in. All I know is what was in the press release. Paul Jenkins is out as racing secretary. He retired but it remains to be seen if some of that retirement will be spent somewhere unpleasant.
I’m sure there will be more to come on this soon enough but yes most of us are aware of this individual’s long overdue departure. We have all learned that when you think things can’t possibly get worse they do… So we hope not to have an even worse replacement.
Personally I’ll say that all the back slapping and handshaking in the paddock involving him the other night was just plain sickening. What’s it going to be next? A race named for him?
Yeah that’s it, the inaugural running of the Paul Jenkins Cheif Advisory Steward Claiming. Won’t be a stakes but everyone will have to pay to be in the race anyway???
From DH’s blog
Taken from DH’s blog:
Penn National has a new website look (http://www.hollywoodpnrc.com/racing) which will be fully available after the Spring Break on April 4. The new site has many bells and whistles which is finally on par with other racing sites including the introduction of FREE live video race replays. One knock on racing as a whole has been their reluctance to offer products such as videos and PP’s for free, but Penn joined the ranks of many other racetrack operators by offering free replays.
Also, a key addition will be a picks summary updated each day by Track Announcer John Bogar. Bogar used to be the co-host of “Racing Alive” where he often offered his opinions between races in a 4-5 minute segment with former co-host Fred Lipkin. The segment has left the simulcast bland which is a disappointment considering the growth of at-home wagering via the computer. More people are now watching simulcasts. Still, the return of Bogar’s picks and insight are welcome especially since nobody has seen more races at Penn National over the last couple of decades than John Bogar. He’s a class act.
There is also some much needed news and notes section which will be dedicated to current events involving horseman as well as promotion for upcoming events such as The World Series of Handicapping which debuted at Penn in 1977 and is the longest contest of its type in the nation.
The website will be fully operational on April 4 when racing returns from their Spring Break.
Penn National announced March 15 that Racing Secretary Paul Jenkins has decided to retire and will enjoy his time in Northeast Pennsylvania–full story on Ray Paulick (search: Paul Jenkins).

updates from DH’s Blog
this is an update on the investigation:

this is an update on the investigation:

It’s not an “update” on anything; it’s just more of Neil Parker’s blathering. [edit]
Hey Vixen,
That rumor we talked about…
It’s true:winkgrin::yes:
Breakdowns
Business as usual now at Philly yesterday…Juan Carlos the supertrainer wins the first two, Adamo wins one and there were two breakdowns and one horse pulled up and walked off. WTF??? Is anyone watching what is going on over there or is it total anarchy!!!
One horse Spicy Steve was claimed off Michael Matz at Delaware over the summer, really sad…
Profida — Not surprised, I kinda knew it was after more bits and pieces of factual events surfaced.
To all following this thread ---- tomorrow will be the first day Penn National will be operating under a new Racing Secretary, Dave Bailey. Whether he’s permanent or not, he’s in office for now.
The job comes with baggage; and I’m not so sure any one of us would like to step in that spot. The best we can all hope for is that the front office wont be run business as Usual any longer.
Tony Adamo has been claiming in his name as T/O, and running them that way. I do hope that he's returning to the Tony Adamo before Gill that was a "by the book" kind of guy. Tony's horse, BTW, broke well and went wire to wire !
As far as events --- things happen, and as it seems at a racetrack...in groups of three (and sometimes fours)... bad luck is just that, bad luck, with some of it just sheer tradegy.
I’m always sorry to hear of Any horse breaking down, for any reason … it happens.
>>did you know that 38riders (and just as many horses) have died(not counting injured) in eventing in the last 10yrs? Comparatively — racing doesnt have that kind of human death toll – now, this is only mentioned to keep things in perspective.
SJdressage: One of the horses at Philly was Joe Orseno's Jackies Express---
I dont recall whenever he last had a breakdown, nice horse, shame.
In last nights 4th race @ CT -- Tim Shanleys Inner Power, went off at 59-1 paying $120.20 to win! He went 3 wide on the turn to take it at the 16th driving for the finish.
