Business As Usual

HBPA ELECTION (finally!!!)

Just got postcard as I’m sure many of you wont to advise of a PA HBPA General Membership Nomination Meeting to be held in the Track Kitchen on Saturday August 4, 2012 at 12:00 noon.
Purpose being to receive nominations for the 2012 election of the President and Board of Directors.

Anyone interested in replacing this corrupt bunch I’d urge to attend.

Any word on nominees?

Not that I’ve heard. Yours truly wasn’t at their meeting and haven’t heard anything except that SB is not seeking re-election.
Keep an eye here:http://www.pahbpa.com/default.asp as well as their facebook and twitter places where they’re liable to post more.

Hoping that they’ve initiated a TNR operation and that would be a requirement, not to feed the cats so that they can be trapped and sterilized. It’s necessary to not feed them while being trapped so if that’s what they are doing it’s a good thing.
FYI, No Nonsense Neutering in Reading PA neuters/spays/earclips ferals for $10. Includes rabies shot.

Oh guess what folks, couldn’t let this go:D
There is no campaigning, handbills, talk or discussion of any kind allowed at PNRC. None of this can be discussed anywhere on the grounds according to the sign on the kitchen door:lol:

I guess that’s why we haven’t heard. Never a dull moment folks.

BTW. for the record the cat policy hasn’t changed. Anyone caught feeding them will still be ruled off so now the place has hungry cats everywhere. Whatever:rolleyes:

On the issue of HBPA can anyone tell us why ice used to be free and is now $2 a bag?

On the ice, I hear it is because a couple barns would come take all the ice, then none left for others.

On the HBPA, how do we know who to vote for or who is even in the running?

Shame on the cat policy.

Yes there have been a few barns known to hog it. Always have been. Simple solution is to have enough for everybody as Mountaineer does and every other well run track I know of.

Now, at $2 a bag icing 4 legs every day this translates to an additional operating cost of $4 per day for each horse. Undoubtedly in the less prosperous outfits (most of them there) horses that need ice won’t be getting any. Also of concern, where is this money going? Once again horsemen’s pockets are being picked with no accountability to where it’s going or for what. Can somebody look into this?

On the HBPA, how do we know who to vote for or who is even in the running?

Ok, just got a PM. Nominees are:
Steph Beatty
Todd Beatty
Tim Shea
Flint Stites

Thanks much to the individual who notified me. You know who you are and it’s appreciated.

I’ve never been to Mountaineer, but every other track I’ve ever been to, you had to pay for ice. Penn was the only one I knew that would give you ice for free. Most of the big (and a lot of middle and small sized trainers too) had their own ice machines in their barns so they had free ice after buying the machine. I’ve either raced or stabled at Philly, Penn, CT, Laurel, Pimlico, Delaware, Colonial, Hialeah, Gulfstream, Calder, Saratoga, Aquaduct, Belmont, Garden State, Atlantic City, Monmouth, Keeneland, Turfway, River Downs, and Churchill and you have to pay for ice at all of them.

I’m pretty sure its the HBPA that has always run the ice at Penn, so they are probably getting the money.

Sheila

IIRC the HBPA paid for the big honkin’ ice machine (ice ROOM lol) at Mountaineer so that the horsemen were insured adequate access to a free supply of ice for their horses. So, essentially, the horsemen bought it for the horsemen - not the track. It does break down once in awhile, and runs low occasionally, but overall it has really been a lifesaver for us.

Spucatum Tauri. Ice machines aren’t allowed at Penn. Neither are washing machines

Demonstrably incorrect. CT has no ice house. If you mean going outside to the Sheetz and getting it that’s what you gotta do. Is none available at the track. Is none at Colonial either. Is free at Philly and Suffolk as well as all the NY tracks. Now would you like to backpedal since you’ve been caught in a few fibs?

I’m pretty sure its the HBPA that has always run the ice at Penn, so they are probably getting the money.

True, track stopped providing it some years ago so HBPA bought ice machines. Like in Mountaineer the horsemen bought it for the horsemen. The water is free so I see 100% profit going to the HBPA. Is there any accounting going on or is it going to be another scandal like all the horse adoption money they bring in? Come on Laurierace! What excuse might Todd have for this one?!

Fills the whole room.:yes::slight_smile:

You can buy ice at CT at the kitchen. They have it just out front. And at Philly you pay for it at the tack shop by the racing office and pick it up over by the big trailers.

TY Profidia, at least now we know who we have to choose from. Why will there be no campaigning and such? Oh well.

Is just another of their diktats. Claiming they won’t have such activity on private property or some other such BS.

BTW forgot to mention-as for Todd Beatty. My source tells me he has no interest in running for any office and has no idea how or why his name got on there.

Steph was supposedly not seeking re-election but she’s on there too.
Business as Usual alive and well:(

Hi Lynne (Profidia)! Didn’t realize I was responding to you, I wasn’t paying attention. Hope you are doing well! Is your horse (Sammy?) back to racing, yet? We are just starting our first homebred two year olds under saddle, so they should, hopefully, be making their first starts this spring. We should catch up sometime. It’s been a while since we spoke.

Spucatum Tauri. Ice machines aren’t allowed at Penn. Neither are washing machines

Bullsh*t, indeed. I haven’t been to Penn recently, but I know a year ago when I bought a CANTER horse from there, there were at least two barns near the top of the hill, that DID have trainer owned ice machines. Maybe that has changed in the last year. I don’t think washing machines are allowed at any of the tracks that I know of anymore. EPA stuff about phosphates and contributing to bad stuff for the ecology.

No backpedalling required as no fibs told. I never said anything about specific ice houses, just the availbility of free ice vs. paid for ice. CT you buy ice in the kitchen. Colonial same deal. Ice is NOT free at Philly–you pay for it in the kitchen and pick it up by the trailers that they store feed and bedding in. Suffolk is not free either–sold in the kitchen. And not free in any NY tracks either–all sold in the kitchen.

Uh, sorry. Wrong guess. First Delahoussaye’s wife thought I was somebody I wasn’t, now you. If you’ve been following this marathon thread you’d see I have no horses. I don’t train or own, nor do I have any association whatsoever with that track as I’ve said numerous times. Although your post was obviously aimed at someone else, I certainly wish you all the best with your horses.

Now,
Can anybody out there tell me why Pennsylvania has two different organizations for horsemen? Philly has PTHA and Penn has HBPA. Matter of fact Presque Isle is also HBPA but no trainers from up there are represented as officers. They’re all PN guys. Wonder if they even voted to join???
Does anybody know how or why this happened?

If you have no association with the track whatsoever why are they wasting their postage sending you a notice of their general membership meetings? As far as the ice goes, as I have said countless time on this thread “why not call them yourself and ask?” And it’s Beattie not Beatty.

Wow. Gave me a lot of time to respond to your PM, huh? I came on here to edit my post removing all references to the mistaken identity as you requested in your PM. But I guess you cleared up who you are. Or at least who you aren’t. I was going to edit my post for you.

I haven’t been on COTH for very long, and rarely post unless I have something constructive or helpful to say, and would never say something that I would mind being associated with my name, which is why I post under my own name, not just a screen name. But I understand that half the fun for some people (and I don’t mean you in particular, just people in general) is the anonymous nature of screen names–let’s them say whatever they want without worry of recrimination.

I did read this whole thread, although it was some months ago, and now I just read the new posts to it. I didn’t pay enough attention to your specific posts to remember that you have no horses, and are not an owner or trainer. My apologies.

You said you know who I meant, so if you know her, you will probably also know that you two are in agreement, almost verbatim, on a lot of the topics affecting racing today. Reading your posts, I can almost picture her! And she owned a horse for many years named Profidia (Proffie), so you can understand my confusion of the two of you. It wasn’t meant to offend you or inconvience you either.

I appreciate your well wishes to me and our (my husband and myself) horses. All the best to you as well.

Sheila

BTW while nobody was looking Stephanie Beattie got herself either elected or appointed to the Vice presidency of the national HBPA.http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/70955/richards-elected-national-hbpa-president
To further expound upon this what exactly is this organization and what do they do? From what I’ve seen the ones who sit on the board are primarily concerned with getting races written to suit their horses, making sure they get run etc.

HBPA has all the trappings of a union-although they’re not. Their membership pays no dues, although Mr Gill claims to have given them millions. So without any dues money where are they getting all their money?

Make no mistake I am all for horsemen having some such organization to advocate for their interests and maybe provide them with some benefits. This is good. Problem is when the organization gets corrupt to the core like these people are:http://www.drf.com/news/louisiana-hbpa-case-fraud-conspiracy-divides-horsemen
and
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2010/november/18/louisiana-hbpa-leaders-facing-felony-charges.aspx
At least this story did have a happy ending:
http://www.wbrz.com/news/former-hbpa-executive-director-gets-13-months-behind-bars/
Oh but wait, theres more:
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/37108/protest-filed-in-controversial-mountaineer-hbpa-election
West Virginia too?
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/52396/high-court-shoots-down-alabama-hbpa-election
and Alabama? Wait WTF? There’s not even any racing in Alabama but they have an HBPA chapter?
There have also been issues in Indiana and Washington State but you all get the idea.

Pennsylvania as everyone who has been following this thread knows, had a very questionable election in their own right a few years ago. Might be just a coincidence that it occurred when these folks were operating at the national level but is still some food for thought. I would encourage PA Horsemen to a different alternative. Why not de-certify this organization and join the PTHA instead? Folks at the helm there are fine decent people with integrity. It would be in the best interests of everybody.

As far as the ice goes, as I have said countless time on this thread “why not call them yourself and ask?”
Couldn’t begin to tell you. Perhaps my not being the only one to live in this house might have something to do with that? No need to call anybody when we have you to grab for the phone and call Todd whenever you see something:cool: BTW, is it true his salary has been raised up to $130,000 now???

I don’t think I have called Todd in ten years but IF I had a question as you do I would do exactly that. Why go to internet strangers when you can get your answer directly? I have no idea what anyone gets paid. I supposed you could call and ask him that as well. Get out your pad and paper and make a list so you don’t forget anything.

I just heard this past week that Ms.Beattie is VP of the National HBPA. I was rather surprised to hear that as there is the matter of the federal investigation into her actions at Penn. I guess there was an investigation that found nothing amiss. Hmm. When did she become VP?
