Two year olds can run on lasix in PA, they can not run on bute.[/QUOTE]
Last I heard they didn’t allow it there. If you’re right I’ll stand corrected on that. Certainly no surprise. Shameful.
I believe the inferred answer was there is no standard policy for ship-in euthanasia.

Correct, Barnfairy which is why Penn could do nothihg at the time. Horses were shipped in as work and go’s and mysteriously got off the trailer unable to breeze.

Sadly, most of the horses going through the feedlots and auctions do not have papers with them so although this is a great thing, it doesn’t always help them- I lost a gelding this way years ago- in spite of my info written all over his papers in black sharpie…he was sold “down the road” by the trainer who actually HAD the papers. Sorry to be OT…
We are currently struggling with a former Gill horse at MAHR that will probably have to be euth’d…
Any updates on Gill and Penn National?
I don’t know if this has already been posted on here and i apologize if it has,but here’s a recent article:
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/55398/gill-racing-needs-to-admit-whats-wrong
What a load of horse manure. He is playing the innocent victim card and I can only hope everyone can see that for what it is.
Boy, I sure hope so. Gill STILL does not get it. He seems to think he’s dealing with another mortgage note and not a live animal. A really delusional person.
I am making a trip to Penn and the area next week to look at a horse for a client and hopefully to buy one or two for myself, all would be mid/upper level event prospects. Here’s my question: Would any of you buy a Gill horse with intent to resale in a year? If the horse has run for him (under how every many trainers but always owned by Gill) would this change your mind?
So far I have 6 to look at (and trying to track down 2 I used to gallop and heard are retiring), but this topic came up yesterday and I was really curious as I know there is one Gill horse I came across that would meet the client’s criteria.
I’ve only been to Penn once, to pick up two mares at 8pm. Met one trainer, had a great experience. I’ll be spending all morning there this time, hopefully it will be fun.

I think it all depends on a couple things:
If Gill hasn’t owned them that long and they were claimed off a reputable trainer- they might be OK…
BUT, if he has had them awhile or if he claimed them off a trainer who does a lot of tapping and unorthodox methods- I might shy away from them.
Lastly, if he claimed them recently for a large claiming tag and has dropped them pretty quicky- I think the red flag goes up there!
Just my insight!
What NYMinute said. I would also add that what may look good at the track could change when you get the horse home and it starts to “detox”. I took a mare a year ago who had been with one of Gill’s trainers for most of her career (owned by Gill for some of it, but this trainer uses some lovely practices on all his horses… not just Gill’s).
I knew she wasn’t going to be sound for riding before I took her. But was amazing to watch how her ankles blew up and one is pretty well fused after whateverthehell they injected her with wore off. She is comfortable at this point, but it’s been a rough year for the poor girl - one ankle is the size of a small grapefruit. When I picked her up, neither ankle looked like there was anything more than a few osslets.
So… get a vet check if you can, be careful, and have fun! Let us know if you find anything!!
vet check
good advice…
and always good to do a PPE on ANY horse.
there are a few who who will vet check at PN, but they do need an appt.
if you have trouble locating one, feel free to pm for a few phone numbers.
To be honest, the vet check may go well but later on, when whatever wears off…try to stick to honest trainers who are true horsemen- I would trust the Canter folks to steer you in the right direction…
Has anyone heard about Deshawn Parker, or know where he is? The last I heard, he had taken a spill on a Gill horse.

Go see trainer Marcia Wolfe, we got my son’s horse from her…very trustworthy
I have one detoxing now, she’s a HUGE mess, not something I want to go through again, if I can help it, and certinally not something I want to send on a cross country trailer trip for sure. We have so many to look at already, we’ll probably pass on the Gill horse.
I pulled the record on the horse, he ran with Gill (or was owned by him, different trainers) for all his starts. Nothing out of line of the record but it’s probably too much of a risk for my client. Too bad, I liked the look of the horse a lot.
Thanks so much for all help here and the PMs, got a lot of vet references and found someone who knew my Janie mare when she was there! And I am hopefully going to be able to go say hello to 3 colts I galloped here, all 3 are really neat, I did all 3 of their first breezes, all gate work, and galloped them for about 5 months, I got attached It will be really neat to just say help to those boys while I’m there!
DickHertz - any word on what happened(if anything) with the feb 17th deal? Did it get pushed back? ongoing?
Grand Jury Hearings
They are going to last for some time. What was learned from the first round of grand jury hearings at the Dauphin County Courthouse on Wednesday is the investigation has immense scope at this point. There were people testifying from all sorts of professions associated with the racetrack. Based on the types of questions asked it would appear they are looking at the following items:
The relationship between a jockey agent and Penn National officials
What has transpired at Elk Creek over NOT JUST THE LAST YEAR but prior to that.
A possible gambling ring among several high profile owners.
There are other items they’re poking into, but the ones listed above are the most concrete.
What is known is that several people associated with the above items are starting to come forward. It’s expected that even those who may be guilty will start to roll and then they’ll all fall like dominos. Or they may not be able to mount enough evidence to convict everyone. We’ll see what transpires.
Do you know if the transcripts of the testimony is available anywhere? I know you can obtain them through the freedom of information act but I believe there is a significant waiting period before that applies.
