BUTET SADDLE REVIEW

Hi guys!

I am moving up into the 1.20m jumpers next season and I am in the market for a new saddle. My current saddle no longer fits my horse as he has bulked up significantly after a full season at 1.10m.

I have my eye on Butet. They are beautiful saddles and I sat in a few different models and thought they were super comfy and offered a really close contact ride which I love. The rep is suppose to come by in the next two weeks for a trial ride and a fitting on my horse. However, I have heard some bad comments about this brand which is making me skeptical. I have heard that they apparently cause back problems in certain horses and the leather tends to wear fast. Any comments? Also, I personally found that the panels looked a little thin… Is that my imagination?

All reviews are welcome!

Thanks for your help!

If you can find an old Butet, it will last you forever.

New Butet’s I’ve heard have cause some major back issues. For me, I found them REALLY uncomfortable (but loooove my old one).

I have not ridden in their newest model however, so I can’t comment on those!

The OLD Butets were great saddles, and wore like iron. The ones made in the 2000s were notorious for causing back-pain with their banana-shaped panels. I believe that Beval updated the panel design with the newer saddle design, but I have not seen one in person yet to verify that.

Hi there
Check your messages !

I own one and ridden now in quite a number. My barn has a lot of horses going in them. All are 2010 or newer so can’t speak to the older ones really… But the four year old ones look great and are ridden in by the pro on 5+ horses daily. The newer ones look good too. mine was delivered in May, I ride 2-3 horses 6 days a week and I am thrilled with its condition. A friend has a 2011 that is in excellent shape. Yes the leather is soft, and I don’t think I would make a habit out of hunting in it for example but for most everyone they are fine. I do hack in mine quite a bit and it survives attacks from wayward tree branches

As far as the fit goes, I tend to think you can cause back problems with any ill fitting saddle no matter the brand. It’s only logical. Butet makes multiple different panels now, as well as tree widths. They can all be customized to you and your horse. While a certain panel did not work at all for my wither-y fellow a different one fits him beautifully. It is horse dependent as all saddles are - that said, the various panel types on saddles throughout our barn tend to work for a number of different body shapes, from the ultra-wither to the flat backed. So there are definitely options.

The saddle itself, well, I’m exceedingly thrilled with it and it’s the first saddle I have owned which I would like to change nothing about. I do bigger jumpers, as do most of the riders at my barn, and find the balance is exceptional. It puts my leg where I want it and need it and keeps it there without locking anything anywhere. It just really puts you where you need to be. I have a flat § seat with a somewhat forward flap (2.5) and the tiniest thigh block. For some time I had one without even a knee pad; the balance was no different. I really love my Butet, and although the cost was a little hard to swallow, it truly is worth every bit.

For what it’s worth I’ve ridden in or owned CWD (would be my second choice on balance alone, though did not work for Mr Withers, and not as fond of the leather), Delgrange (amazing grain leather and ideal craftsmanship as well as incredible customer svc, just too much saddle for me, and the config didn’t work for my horse), County, Antares, Schleese, Devoucoux and a zillion others. Butet definitely tops the list. I’ve just never sat in something that immediately made riding so much easier.

Butet’s are beautiful saddles, but I think for the price, I would rather buy something else that is more customizable.

Thank you so much for your great feedback! The butet rep is coming this weekend for a trial. So far I have tried CWD & Antares and loved CWD.

Glad you’re having the Butet rep out. They are just as customizable as the other saddle brands now. I have a Devoucoux, two Butets, a CWD and an Antares in my barn and the Butets are my favorite (followed by the Dev).

Have a 1992 model. Looks gorgeous still. When I was a junior, it was on 3-5 horses per day, no problem with holding up. It had some time off and now gets used only 3x a week, but still looking great. I use it with a SaddleRight pad, and have not had any back issues.

Really partial to it as it just seems to mold to me so well - it is a deep seat with NO blocks, but it is incredibly secure feeling on a variety of horse types. Had the billets, knee pads, panel leather and seat leather replaced ~2004, right before I bought it (from Antares, so Antares leather), but otherwise the rest is original.

Not too sure what you mean by this… They are at least as customizable, if not more so, than the comparable brands. Lots of options and the number of tweaks you can make are limitless.

I have a mid 80’s model (yes, that old!) and a 2004. I love them both…the newer one does have more fragile leather in the seat, so no jeans as the seams can leave a mark…the older one never had that problem.

I love full chaps, and so I wear them over breeches which keeps the 2004 looking great.

I am very happy with the way they both fit my 2 horses, who are dramatically different in build. I have a QH type paint and a OTTB. The latter I use a gel pad and regular shaped pad. For the paint, just the pad.

I am sure there are other wonderful saddles you could find…but as a review, I give 2 thumbs up on Butet.

Love my Butet, Ive used it for several different horses and shim a necessary with a thinline. When I was looking i tried the Antares (hated), and CWD (never got use to the pommel) and was actually ready to order a customized one. When the rep said flaps tend to need to be replaced every 5-6 years I backed out. Really? for a 5k saddle?

Tried my trainers Butet, and its been love ever since. I have a 2009. The amount of times I fall off has dropped tenfold, haha, and Ive made some pretty miraculous recoveries with it (of course this is compared to school saddles)

I am hoping to finally get my own horse late next year and will definitely be trading it in for a customized butet, there are a ton of different tree types to help customize. Mine still looks great but I do baby it by riding in breeches, keeping it in my apt, and slathering akene on it.

But man I love that saddle.

I used to ride in a Butet, and I loved it. I thought about getting another one for my new horse, and asked my saddle fitter for her opinion. She said they have started recessing the stirrup bars deeper into the saddle. That makes it more comfortable for the rider, but the bar has to go somewhere: Into the horse’s back. So, she said to stay far away from them, unfortunately.

customizable to me means that it may be made to fit my horse (not necessarily even me) when I get it and may work for a while as is - but how adjustable is it truly down the road?
