Buying a saddle in the US from Canada. Tax Help

Has anyone recently purchased a saddle in the US from Canada?

I found a saddle with the right configuration but I can’t find a concrete answer on what tariffs and duty I will owe. Just trying to figure out if it is still worthwhile with the extra tariff and duty

The saddle is also an Italian brand.

I’ll be interested in the replies.

If you’re buying from a store or retailer, I’d expect that they’d be able to tell you how much you are likely to pay. And they probably know how to handle the paperwork to streamline the process for you.

But if you’re buying from an individual, your best bet might be to contact the shipper that you intend to use and get an estimate from them.

It used to be that anything valued at less than $800 and intended for personal use was not subject to import taxes. But your saddle may be worth more than that and that rule may have changed anyway.

Good luck!

If you are buying from Ontario you’ll be charged 13% sales tax. You can request this be tax exempt and pay your local sales tax via the broker (UPS/ FEDex Etc) who will collect this C.O.D.

Unless they are very good at the paperwork you’ll also pay 25% tariff* on the USD amount of the saddle (so convert the CAD price into USD and it’s 25% of that).

The paperwork could have an origin of Italy but the broker may determine it’s a Canadian purchase.

Clear as mud?

  • I think that is the current tariff rate. That’s our current rate from US purchases into Canada.

That rule is changing as of the end of the month, so there will be a minimum $80+ tax on imported packages. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/07/trump-suspends-trade-loophole-for-cheap-online-retailers-globally/
