Hi All,
I am considering buying a saddle on-line. I have never bought anything online that wasn’t from Ebay. So my Question is…Is there anyway to ensure the I will get the saddle after I send the money? I don’t blame her for wanting the money first and don’t mind…but…I don’t know this person from Adam. And I got too thinking what if she cashes the check then dosen’t send the saddle. Im in Florida and this person is on the west coast so going there is out of the question.
Thanks!
Where is it being offered for sale? Does the seller accept PayPal? Some sales venues are more trustworthy than others, and with PayPal you have some recourse even if it is an off eBay sale.
Hi
It was a private listing and no PayPal…
Thanks
PayPal is easy to get. It makes it much safer for both parties. I can’t imagine why the seller would object. It protects her also.
I believe there are also escrows online that will hold your $ until you get the item, then release the funds to the seller.

This would be a real easy decission for me…no paypal = no buy.
I want the method of payment to be my choice. On sellers even off ebay I may send a check if they have had a decent amount of paypal transactions.
Online without paypal to a different state you have no guarantees at all that the person is even real!
I bought my saddle on tacktrader.com
I sent a check.
Via email, we discussed the details and seller agreed to take saddle back should it not fit the horse (though I had tried the same make/model on my horse before purchase).
I probably couldn’t been royally screwed–as might the seller have been. I really do think that paypal is a better option. Protects everyone.
A Paypal account is easy to set up and gives both the buyer and seller some protection, even if the transaction is not via ebay.
I also recently purchased a used saddle from a seller on Tacktrader.com and paid by check. I phoned the seller and she emailed me lots and lots of pictures of the saddle. It was a gamble I know but with talking with the seller I trusted her. I got the saddle and it fits both me and my horse great. Best of luck.
Another buyer from Tacktrader.com. I had a lot of e-mail communications with the seller. Both of us were e-mailing from our work addresses. Easy enough to check out if I really had wanted to. Meaning I could have called her empolyer (it was a large bank) and gotten though to her that way.
I sent a certified check and she sent me the saddle. Sometimes you just get a feeling when you converse with people. All was well with my transaction.
Hi All
Thanks for the response! I should have added that this is a part trade.
I have a saddle she wants and I want hers… Hers is worth more. So It’s a trade plus some money… She seems honest and we have been emailing for about two weeks. SHe actually contacted me about my saddle ( I had it listed privately.)
Thanks
I have sold several saddles on Tacktrader. I have had great success. I have always used Paypal and will only ship to verified users. It is very important because if the buyer is not verified (they have to have a verified address) they can say they never received the saddle and chargeback (through the cc company)the price of the saddle. Paypal protects you if the buyer (seller too) are verified.
I’ve just posted this write up over on another thread on this same topic, seemed relevant here also:

As a personal seller and now recently online consignment shop owner, I strongly advise PayPal !!
Most of the tack sale groups I’ve been in recommend treating a trade as two separate purchases. Then use Paypal for the protection. So if your saddle is worth $800 and hers is worth $1200 (your saddle plus $400), you Paypal her $1200 and she Paypals you $800, then you ship the saddles to each other. The money still comes out even, but if either party doesn’t come through, then a dispute can be filed.
I refuse to sell to somebody who doesn’t have PayPal. I just went around Robin Hood’s barn with a buyer trying to help them set up PayPal. They wanted to mail me a check, and I refused, too risky. They kept coming up with excuses on why they couldn’t get PayPal to work for them, so finally I stopped reading and responding to their messages. Too much of a hassle.
I buy and sell online a lot and will only use PayPal.
