Buying breeches for the first time...

and I don’t know how to figure out my size. These ones look good to me for the price:

I am a size small in dresses or 2-4 and am 5"6. Should I get extra small or small?

I’m 5’7" weigh about 126 pounds, wear a 4 and a small is perfect.

I weight about 110 lbs. Currently I have my old ones from when I was 12. They are a medium in kids and fit me well.

If this is your first time at the breeches rodeo, I’d suggest working with a saddlery with more personal customer service than Dover Saddlery. If you were someone I knew and cared about, I’d be encouraging you to go with Smartpak instead. They ship free over $75 and they have a 100% Happiness Guarantee on sized items–which means you can return any sized items with free return shipping. Their customer service agents are super helpful, too. If in doubt about sizes, just call them and ask for advice.

Thank you, this is wonderful advice. I will look on their site.

They don’t have the stickyseat breeches :frowning: I like the looks of those since they don’t have seams on the legs that may potentially bother me. I wonder if I should order directly off of their site.

…very seriously, I would not order these unless you’ve already tried them locally and/or there’s a good return policy. It’s like wearing a pimple-grip glove all over your thighs. Some people love that feeling. Other people get the willies from it.

If you really dig these, you can still probably do better than Dover. Schneider’s ships free over $100, and Big Dee’s ships free over $70. There’s usually coupon codes for both sites on Retailmenot.com. Schneiders’ site says they “tend to run small.”

I really love these - good price, and feel like you’re wearing a legging. I’m 5’3" and 115lbs and wear a Small.

To be fair…Dover will give you sizing advice, and if you wear those for 3 months and aren’t happy with them for any reason, Dover will give you an exchange or refund. Smartpak won’t. So…free shipping is nice, but it isn’t everything.

there was a thread recently about a woman who purchased a pair of bradley breeches second hand. yeas she bought them used and then contacted smartpak and got store credit for them. so i would not say smartpak does not retun once worn.

I have always found Smartpak to have a very very generous return policy. They have earned my forever loyalty!

You can return anything at Dover for any reason. I have at least 3 pairs of the StickySeat Eventer breeches and they are incredibly comfy, they breathe, and THEY GRIP!! Wonderful green or spooky horse breeches, especially for scary cross country jumps, because of the grip.
This is the very first time I’ve seen them sold by Dover, and I’m so excited they sell them now. I’ve always bought them directly from the company.

What you should do is get a therapist and a stiff drink, you’re going to need both by the time you’re done! Is it remotely possible to just go to a tack store? I haven’t found sizing to be consistent even in the same brand just because of the different fabrics available.

I have purchased them directly from Stickyseat. They do allow returns, so if they don’t fit I will just return them. I found a $5 off coupon online as well. I couldn’t find these at the tack shops near me, and those shops are so overpriced.
