Buying from Bowie “kill pen”?

That saddlebred mare really caught my eye. Looks like a sweet, fancy gal. As did the Friesian sport gelding, and the chestnut TB mare that was all business.

Unfortunately the list is never empty :grimacing:

Thank you for taking them. I sent a small token toward your expenses. I just fattened up a loaner horse that was babysitting my mare so I’m a bit short of $$ right now but once he goes maybe I can send more.

Meant to reply to Heinz 57

Bless you!

I know we’re all waiting impatiently… They’ve been loaded and are on the way. Once they get here I’ll give them their own thread.

You’ve earned two gold stars in the great scorecard in the sky for this. Can’t wait to see their progress, although from the back they look in pretty decent shape.

They are here! Well, actually they got here an hour ago but like always, everything happens at once. After I post this I’ll go make them their own thread.

ETA: Here’s their thread - More New Horses: Bert and Ernie

Someone PLEASE pick up this guy:

He is JUST the sweetest looking boy.

Nice horse, but he seems to trot slightly head nodding off on his right front?
If so, it could be nothing, a bad moment, the rider, a stone bruise, or why he is there, what do you think?

There’s definitely a head bob there

Not sure if she’s still available because I haven’t looked today, but there was a beautiful grey mule on there. Granted, I’m partial to mules for whatever reason, but she seemed like a nice type

Edit: here she is:

Also, I’ve not been this tempted in awhile…but this is a nice older (15) gelding. He does require some investigation and rehab for that swelling on his leg, but what a nice type. For the price, he’s one I’d take a shot on to see if he could be rehabbed into a nice low-key riding/basic trail horse.

Why do I want a lame plain bay gelding?

Because he’s adorable and looks like a sweetheart! Oh, I hope he gets someone who gives him a chance to heal and be a best friend.

As an aside, WHY to sellers think I need a horse I can stand up on? Never understood that move. And, generally, I try to AVOID sliding off my horse’s butt.

I am so, so tempted.

I think in this case the standing and sliding was just to show the horses disposition a little bit. It demonstrated that he’s not all that reactive and seems to be somewhat tolerant or trusting of whatever weird thing the human is doing. You can tell a few things about how the horse handles someone doing “abnormal” things to them. Their body language and reaction can give you a little tell into who they are. A picture of someone standing on a horse isn’t as meaningful, IMO.

He is nice!

The roan in the background really caught my eye!

This Standardbred mare looks lovely!

Welp, just have a little bird tell us all what enabling you need to cross from temptation to achievement.

He is nice isn’t he? Hope he and the bay TB get a soft landing. The TB seems like a peach.

Put some shoes on him, he’ll be fine. That’s cement under that bit of dirt, it’s a wonder that ANY horse looks sound in these videos.

While I’m still incredibly tempted by the Morgan and almost hit the button last night, I think that I shouldn’t. With the purchase price, quarantine, shipping, and whatever else in that time (farrier, wormer, whatever) he’s going to be a $4k+ horse. I could buy a more “known” horse/prospect around here for low four figures if I wanted one. Then he’s $600/month minimum when he gets to me. Even with the money there, it makes no sense.

I could possibly keep him for a little less elsewhere but then I’d have 2 horses 45 minutes apart (plus distance from home). I don’t have the time for that.

Someone will get him, and he may make a decent low-key riding horse. I’d love to have him, but the responsible side of me says no. Granted, I’ve basically set thousands of dollars on fire in the past and I’m about to drop $1k+ on x-rays for my existing horse (just hoof x-rays for a baseline) but still, DH would surely send me packing or to the nearest mental institution

It’d be easy to have a second horse where current horse is and they could share a field if they got along, and it’d give DH a chance to ride with me again if Morgan is rideable for me. If he were just a pasture pet, atleast he’d be a pretty one and I’m also comfortable with “early” euthanasia if it doesn’t pan out, but those thousands of dollars should go elsewhere. Still going to follow others that go through with Bowie purchases and live vicariously.

Dang it! Responsibility rears its ugly head again. Thanks for at least running the numbers, tho. Hopefully someone else out there is doing the same thing and it works out for them.

Yeahhh, I can afford it, but it’s better to keep all of the money in savings for our future property…and then I can collect animals  we also move every 3 to 4 years, so need I that to calm down too.
