More New Horses: Bert and Ernie

Spinning off from the Bowie Livestock Auction/O’Dwyer horses thread, I present to you the 2yo Dutch Harness duo:

Bert

and Ernie

My hauler did an EXCELLENT, most excellent job. Unfortunately, they were loaded loose and so loose when arrived, and dear Bert was at the back and not interested in any part of being caught in the trailer. As it sometimes goes with buying horses sight unseen and having them shipped to you, you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit. :joy: We switched to plan B (plan A being them going out in the nice, BIG grassy field at the opposite end of the property) which was to back the trailer up to the end paddock gate and unload them loose. Of course, this makes quarantining impossible with a shared fence line - I’ll deal with it. I knew it was a possibility.

Also unfortunately, due to some delays my hauler did not arrive until just 20 minutes before I had to meet the school bus down the street :joy: but it all worked out in the end. They figured out the hotwire fence in about 30 seconds and don’t seem prone to theatrics, so I wasn’t TOO concerned about leaving them alone for 10 minutes. They were right where I left them when I returned.

They are very wary of humans and pretty shut down right now given all they’ve gone through in the last month. Humans have not been their friends lately, if ever. They will need to be separated eventually, otherwise I doubt I’ll be catching either one - Ernie is slightly more amenable but he’s following Bert’s lead, and Bert says no thank you right now. Major side-eye.

That’s OK, I’ve got time.

On to the pictures:

The face that says it all.

A new adventure for you! Once you start to feed them yummy pelleted food, they’ll love you.

Those faces tho! So sweet. Thank you for taking them in, hopefully they will come around quickly for you!

Poor Bert looks very over it.

I’m sure they’ll come around, though I know nothing about DHH temperaments. No doubt they be happier with you though!

cannot wait to see their progress - bless you for saving them.

They are gorgeous, even with needing groceries and a hoof trim. They aren’t in too bad of shape!

I look forward to following their progress. Thank you again for taking them in and giving them a chance.

“Life is such a bother. If it weren’t for this helping of food, I’d have nuthin’ in this world. Nothing, I tell ya’!”

There’s nothing greater than a horse that decides to trust! So happy they arrived and soon they will realize that THEY HIT THE JACKPOT! Congrats on adding to Sesame’s Street :joy:

Now that they’re side by side, they look very similar. Not just their markings, but in their faces and basic conformation, too. Is it possible they are half-siblings? Like, having the same pasture breeding sire?

Regardless, they are both very nice horses that will make interesting projects… and I mean that in the nicest way! Thank you again for taking them away from an uncertain future.

And give your husband a hug, too. What a guy to let you get two more horses, especially greenie beanies!

If they came from the same place they might have the same sire which could explain the similarities.

They look like they will come around. Too bad they didn’t come with halters, that would have made things easier.

Looking forward to the 6 month photos! Another set of fancy horses in disguise!

Even still have the auction tags in their tails. They truly got a needed break with their new owner.

I think Bert and Ernie are muttering to each other “Oh yay, good eats in this new place!”

Their eyes tell their story. Looking forward to following your journey with them.

Awwww!! I’m sure they will get settled and start to warm up :purple_heart:

I LOVE the names. They are my and my husbands nicknames for each other. I’m the Ernie and he’s the Bert :joy:

They will come around they are DHH which means they are curious and inquisitive by nature. Give them a bit and they will be your shadow. Just takes them a minute.

So glad you got them. That bay is going to be a fancy when he gets a bit of cleaning up and training. Chestnut as well.
