Buying my first endurance horse

I am getting into endurance racing, and I am checking out some horses to help me get started. I don’t know a whole lot about Arabians or endurance racing, and the best bloodlines for this, so I am hoping to get some feedback/advice suggestions from anyone with some experience in this area?

I’ve got two main prospects now:

  1. I’ll be riding this guy this weekend at my first race: https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/saay+no+more

My main concern is that he is 15 years old (gelding). I also have no idea how useful the Tammen stuff is as a performance animal. But, this guy does have some 50 mile races under his belt.

I have ridden him in an arena, and so far, I really like how he rides and his temperament.

  1. The next horse is a 6 year old Polish mare: https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/ccr+hot+hot+hot

He’s asking the same price range for her. She wasn’t ready to be ridden, and she’s never been taken from his farm before. Before I take her, the breeder will get her right, and I will be able to ride her in a race to give her a try before I buy. She’s really small, too. I didn’t ask, but she’s at or under 14 hands. I don’t really care about this, as long as she gets the job done. But, it seems like small horses are not in high demand at all. (PS: I am 5’5" and 140#). The breeder says she is going to make an amazing and winning horse and that she is very athletic.

From my limited knowledge on Arabians, they both seem to have some very good bloodlines.

I don’t really care about breeding horses and selling them, or even reselling any horse that I do settle on for any kind of profit if I can get some good use out of the horse for the next few years. I honestly just want to ride and race. Part of me feels that if I never had to buy a horse, and I could just ride other people’s, that would even suit me fine. But, part of me also wants to have one or two to fool around with and keep around so I can ride on my own schedule at my own house. And I do like the idea of training my own horses. But, I don’t want to have the responsibility and pressure of breeding them and trying to make this into a side hobby business.

Anyway, I’d love to hear thoughts from more experienced and seasoned horse people on these two horses, their bloodlines, etc. I’m so new, I don’t even know what questions I need to even be asking. And I’m in no hurry to buy.
