Shopping around for a gut supplement and in the description of one it says it is safe for long term use because it does not contain calcium, magnesium, or aluminum. Are these ingredients really unsafe for a horse to consume long term? They are in so many gut supplements that are marketed for long term maintenance, especially calcium and magnesium. Hadn’t heard that before and can’t find much with a quick google search.
Well, horses need a certain amount of calcium and magnesium. Too much of either can cause problems. If you know your diet is properly balanced you might not want to overdose long-term. On the other hand magnesium calming supplements seem to work on horses that are magnesium deficient. So you need to understand the base diet first. Including hay and VMs.
What product? How much Ca and Mg is in a serving? My guess is there’s less Ca and Mg in a serving, than in a typical serving of a ration balancer and fortified feed
