I just ordered a new Amerigo (Squeal!!:D) that’s calfskin. Just wondering what everyone was using on their calfskin saddles? Of course they recommended the Amerigo cleaners and conditioners, but I can’t get those easily near me once I run out of what they are including with the saddle. Hoping there are other cleaners/conditioners out there I can get more local to me.
What about the Effax and Passier lines or product?
I use Oakwood products on my County calfskin saddle. I love them.
Honestly, most cleaners and conditioners on the market are pretty similar. I used castile soap + Passier Lederbalsam on my calfskin Amerigo for years (it’s now approx. 6 years old and still in great shape.) I also own a can of Amerigo Soft Grease, or whatever it’s called, and it’s fine but it’s no better or worse than the Lederbalsam.
But I recently converted to Higher Standards Leather Care soap and balm, and it’s the best stuff I’ve ever used on my tack. My Passier and Amerigo products are now going unused. We have switched to Higher Standards for everything - calf, cow and buffalo and it is great on all. The only other thing I ever use is Albion Balm http://www.albionsaddlemakers.co.uk/accessories/accessory-range/cleaner/swiss-leather-balm-1.html
ditto on switching to Higher Standards products for all my leather-including my full calf devoucoux.
Another vote for Higher Standards! Started using that line in the last 6-8 months and love it. I’ve had my calf skin for about three years now and prior to that I was just using either Mad Cow or plain castille soap, and then Passier or Effax Ledersbalsam.
One thing I try not to do is let the leather get too dry, but then also no over conditioning. I have only oiled once, and that was when I first got it.

Yep, here’s another vote for higher standards!! I also just bought a new pinerolo Amerigo and ordered the Higher Standards kit the same day, I loved cleaning my saddle the first time I swear it looked even better than new

I’m not the greatest about planning ahead as to when I may run out then ordering online. I’m hoping to get ideas regarding brands that are easy to pick up that my local tack/farm store may have. I like supporting them.
