Call of the Agua Caliente Handicap in Movie Phar Lap

Just rewatched this video last night. Awesome movie. I still tear up when the horse is trotting in hand down to the start after his late arrival at the Melbourne Cup in time as the crowd cheers and also when he dies, of course.

But in the AC Handicap scene, WHO was “calling” that race? I kept thinking, I swear I know this voice, I’ve heard him call real races, not just movie scenes. Wonder if they paid an actual modern caller (1980s, I think) to “call” it from a script.

Does anybody know who called it for the movie? Just that race, an American caller. They used an Aussie caller, of course, for all the earlier race scenes down under.

Here is the actual 1932 Agua Caliente Handicap.:smiley: This isn’t the caller I’m wondering about; I want to know the caller in the movie. But amazing to actually see Phar Lap’s move in this race.

According to IMDB, the racecallers were Shawn Cosgrove and Bill Laherty for the Australian races, and Dave Johnson for the American ones (and yes, he did call big races on TV, though worked in several movies as well:

It was Dave, I am 99% positive. (and will hit 100% when I can get home and listen again)

And yes he is an awesome race caller. And a really nice guy.
