Effective immediately according to his agent. Amazing athlete who added flair to his work!
Kind of abrupt, I hope he is OK.
Me as well, he had scheduled mounts over the next few days that he won’t be riding.
I hope he’s ok as well. Quite the character.
I wish him well. I’ll miss him for sure. My all time favorite memory of him is when he and Mine That Bird rode the rail to a Derby victory.
Dang, now that only leaves Johnnie V in my virtual stable jockey watch.
I was wondering at the sudden stop, too. I would be moderately peeved were I the owner of one of the horses he was booked to ride as it’s not like we’re talking a week or more in advance. I hope he’s all right as retiring so abruptly seems very strange indeed.
Maybe he did not want to put a whammy on himself-set a date to retire and then not get to the date safely.
Steve Byk was talking about this and in true Steve Byk fashion, he didn’t mention retirement. I listened to the broadcast twice and no mention of retirement. Steve simply said “the news coming from Calvin Borel”
He went into great detail about his race carreer wins and his agent but never said what on earth he was talking about. Simply Hilarious. I visit this site for the news as he sure doesn’t get the point.
I guess you have to know the horse news prior to listening to his show.
Whatever the reason behind such a quick step down, he’s more than earned to enjoy his retirement.
He was one of my all time favorite jockeys. Never forgot what it was like to be one of the “little people” even after his success. He’d give as good a ride to the $5000 claimer as he did to best horse out there. He did it for the joy & love of the sport.
And he was funny as himself in the movie 50-1.
Where can one find the 50-1 movie? Thanks!
Thanks, DT!
