Calvin Borel to meet the Queen!!!

From Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Jockey Calvin Borel can add another first to his list after winning the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
He’s been invited to attend a state dinner at the White House in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
Borel’s agent, Jerry Hissam, said Sunday that White House Social Secretary Amy Zantzinger had invited Borel and fiance Lisa Funk to travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday for the dinner hosted by President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip.
Britain’s royal couple was at Churchill Downs when Borel guided Street Sense from 19th place in a 20-horse field to win the $2 million Kentucky Derby by 2 1/4 lengths. It was the first Kentucky Derby victory in five attempts for the 40-year-old native of St. Martinville, La.

That is AWESOME!!

Yep! I spoke with Lisa’s mom today and she told me that a store even opened up just so Lisa could get a dress! (I reported earlier that they were married…that is how Suzanne refers to Calvin, but their marrage was postponed due to an accident last year). The owner’s of the barn I lease are throwing a party next weekend for Suzanne and Mike, Lisa’s parents! I can’t wait!

How Exciting!

I must admit, ever time I see the pictures and video it brings tears to my eyes. The raw, pure joy in his expressions are overwhelming. I felt privy to one remarkable human beings greatest moment. Truly the way we all want to see a great guy win!

I have been so happy since the Derby, and I think it’s because of the goodness of all the players: Borel and Naftzger and Tafel. All of them were just so gracious. And you can tell that they all really, really cherish this horse. And you can tell, I think, what a happy, confident horse this is.

I really had to laugh when Borel was grabbing and hugging everybody he passed by.   What a guy! Stoic, he ain’t. (A scene I’d like to see is when QE2 and he actually meet. Ms. Reserve and Mr. Bubbles.

Another thing, he was so comfortable up there bouncing around on top of his horse that he reminded me of a little kid.

Great rider. I’m glad he won. (But not as glad as he was  .)

MTA: Here’s a nice article on Borel. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2860738&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines

My goodness, if you had told me 13 yrs ago when I met Calvin and Cecil that Calvin would one day be having dinner with the Queen of England I would have called you crazy!!! I met Calvin at Hot Springs when we were out there for the meet. I met Cecil at a party, Crawfish Boil of course, and understood about every third word, LOL!

By the way, I have NEVER seen anyone eat crawfish as fast as Calvin… NEVER!

Thanks GG, I was looking for some photos! They cleaned up beautifully!

Thanks for the photos. The Queen probably had more in common with CB than with anyone else in the room.

I hope that he and QE2 got to pass a few words beyond the expected. Anybody know?

All in all, I’m just charmed.

Did anyone read the story about Calvin being a couple ounces short of making weight? I read somewhere that he removed his teeth and made it! I think that’s why he was a little hard to understand (in addition to being a Cajun boy from LA!). He’s my new hero :D. Wonder if he told the queen about this tactic?

Here’s a snippet from an Associated Press story about the dinner:

Borel said he got a little nervous while waiting in the receiving line, though Bush quickly set his guest at ease.
“The president gave me a hug and asked me where I stole my tux,” Borel said. “I said I found it on the side of the road. Then I mellowed out real good.”
After meeting the queen, Borel simply sat at the table and was amazed at the number of people who came up to offer congratulations, including “a football player” who turned out to be Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
“You wouldn’t imagine the people that come up to me and talked about the horses,” he said. “It was like their wives would go get them and say 'Let’s go sit over there (next to me).”’

Nice Article!

It really seems like it couldn’t have happened to a better guy… not that the other jockeys are unworthy, but he just seems so genuine that the pictures of him smiling are making me all teary.

He truly looks beyond happy for this good fortune and that really makes the difference. Sure plenty of other jocks have been ellated too but there is just something about the way Calvin looks and acts - its different and genuine.

I thought the way he didn’t hesitate for a moment to wash down Street Sense (who was coated with mud) before they got even near the winner’s circle showed he was thinking about the horse.

DRF - by Martin McGee - May 9th “Derby star Borel enjoying ‘Best days of my life’”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In his first day back at work, Calvin Borel got a reception worthy of royalty. Still aglow from the first Kentucky Derby victory of his 25-year riding career, Borel got several rounds of applause from a smattering of Churchill Downs regulars before riding in the first race Wednesday.

The warm greeting came less than 48 hours after Borel and his fiancee, Lisa Funk, attended a white-tie dinner at the White House, where he exchanged formal pleasantries with Queen Elizabeth II of England and took some good-natured ribbing from President Bush about his tuxedo and tails.

Borel called Bush “awesome, a great guy.”

“He said, ‘Where’d you get those stripes there, ol’ boy?’” Borel said. “I laughed and said something about finding them on the side of the road. He made me feel right at home right away.”

Borel wound up sitting at a table that included the president’s daughter Barbara and the football star Peyton Manning. He said he made conversation amid the 134 invited guests with “some really important people,” including former Secretary of State Colin Powell, with whom he exchanged autographed dinner menus as souvenirs. “You couldn’t imagine all the people coming up to me, wanting to talk horses,” he said.

The invitation to the first white-tie affair in the six-plus years of the Bush administration was extended Sunday, although Borel thought someone was pulling a prank on him.

“I got a call from Pat Day, and he said, ‘You’d better go, son, it’s a chance of a lifetime,’” he said. “That’s when I knew it was for real.”

The dinner came some 48 hours after Borel, 40, got the thrill of a lifetime by giving Street Sense a textbook ride in winning the 133rd Derby before the queen in a crowd totaling 156,635, third-largest in Derby history. He returned from Washington on Tuesday morning, then was out early Wednesday to work two horses before coming to see Street Sense at Barn 26 at Churchill at about 7:40 a.m. He hung around for about 40 minutes, laughing and talking most of the time with members of trainer Carl Nafzger’s staff and passersby offering their congratulations.

“It’s been unbelievable,” Borel said later at a noontime media conference in the Churchill paddock. “The best days of my life.”

Late in the media conference, Borel watched a replay of the Derby on the big-screen television atop the paddock, and after Street Sense surged past Hard Spun to take command, he said, “Right here, he’s not running anymore. He’s just galloping. This horse is unbelievable.”

Asked what he thought about Street Sense’s chances to win the second leg of the Triple Crown, the May 19 Preakness at Pimlico, Borel said, “I think we’re going to get 'em.”

Before the first race Wednesday, nearly 100 fans and Churchill employees lined the fenced walkway leading from the jockeys’ room to the paddock, and when Borel emerged, they let out a polite roar, followed by lengthy applause. Minutes before, Borel had told the media that such an honor was “what I’ve worked for my entire life.”

I didn’t read this story, but I wondered if he might be missing some teeth. At the Derby trophy presentation, he had a big smile but it was a closed-mouth smile. Maybe being a few ounces over is also why he has the buzz haircut!

Ravenclaw, I did see a couple of post race photos with his mouth open and it looks like he has a partial for his uppers and wasn’t wearing it. I LOVE this story and I hope it’s been entered into the giant book of great racing tales.

God love him.

the more I see of him the more I want to grab him and hug him…

Here’s a quote from Calvin in an AP story about all the attention for him after the Derby:

Maybe, but after more than 4,000 wins – many of them providing shrewd or brave investors with a hefty payday – Borel longed for a chance to get on a horse capable of winning his sport’s biggest race.
“All I asked is that God give me a chance to be five or less to one,” Borel said.
