Does anyone use Camelina oil? What benefits have you noticed? I am looking for joint support, weight maintenance on a hard keeper and possibly mood enhancer.
Oh wait, she’s a chestnut mare…scratch the mood haha
Camelina oil has some benefits but it seems to have gotten very popular in the horse world lately due to good marketing. I believe flax oil has one of the best omega profiles and is fairly easy to find, also just ground flax, but even better would be finding an oil that has DHA content like Mad Barn W3 or KER EO3.
I have fed Camelina Smart Earth Oil to my horses and dog for years. I do love it, I found a difference in their coats (though pretty much any oil will do that), and my older dog moved so much better on it. It also put on some great weight on my 24 year old pony that dropped a ton of weight while out on lease.
Now I havent tried the Mad Barn W3 but I’ve heard a lot of good things and will be trying it in the spring. . I currently don’t have any ponies on oil through the winter (I use Athlete now as a fat supplement and it also helps with hooves/coat) but start back with an oil up again in the spring before show season to give that extra bloom. My pup is on herring oil right now as I like to rotate oils with her.
Curious why you rotate oils with your dog? I have a new dog (18months) that I would like to start on something as she has a very rough coat. hm no pun intended to me ( she is a rough Collie) haha
@colorfan - I rotate depending on what protein I’m feeding my pup. I don’t change oils too often, maybe 2-3 times a year. Here is an article I loosely base my fats/oils off of.
I did notice a huge difference in my 12 year old lab once I fed Camelina to him. He was able to get up a lot easier and move around a bit better (had arthritis in his legs and back). I took him off it and noticed quickly how much more poorly he was able to get around. I put him back on it and a few weeks later he was moving around easier again. I kept him on it until we had to put him down at 14 due to cancer.
Camelina oil was very expensive amd didnt do diddly for my OTTB
I use flaxseed oil and rice bran oil - one better O3 and the other better O6 based on lengthy convo with nutritionist. He gets mistaken for a WB all the time
Camelina oil is marketed as “superior” to flax oil but only due to its longer shelf life. Flax is a much, much better source of Omega 3s. I have discovered that you can get flax oil in an airtight pouch (like wine) for great shelf life. I give it to all my horses. It’s made by Horse Guard.
For my horses who need a lot of oil for calories, I use canola because it’s affordable and has the most omega3s of the cheaper oils.
This is the flaxseed oil I use and love it. I also love it combined with rice bran oil. I give the Horse Guard Trifecta also as none of my horses are on grain. Two thumbs up!
I feed a cup of whole flax.
Whole flax? I remember a few years ago I read a study where they found the hulls of flax seed in the poop but the good stuff was consumed. Can’t seem to find it again. Wish I could because whole flax is more stable than ground.
My mare appears to be getting the benefits of shiny water resistant coat, and there are no flax plants in her paddock. I think horse digestion and stomach acid are pretty intense. They also digest whole oats, and actual twigs.
Flaxseed oil is best as it is more bioready than the others.
