Camp Helper/ Employee

Decided to change my mind about posting here on COTH.

At 14 you’re still probably a bit on the young side for people to want to put you in a position of too much responsibility. You’d probably be accepted into a camp counselor in training program but you would need to pay to attend the camp.

I really applaud your work ethic and willingness to earn your own way, however, as a mother of two girls around your age, I would fall over if I read a post like this from them. I would love to think everyone on here is of pure intention, but that is an assumption I would not make in any forum. Please, please ask your parents or people you know and your parents have vetted to help you find employment. The world is just full of very bad people just looking for opportunities to hurt children and your post is an open invitation. Just my two cents as a helicopter mom. But, again, good for you for having such strong values. Good luck!

@Morgan. Thank you very much for your response. How do I delete this topic from the forum?

How do I delete this entire thread?

There is no “delete thread” option. However, you can delete the contents of your initial post.

Just go to the post, click Edit, then highlight and delete the text. Then click Save. But you might put something in it’s place, like “changed my mind about posting question” or “deleted due to _______” so future readers know why it went poof.

And @Morgan is probably right. Best to hit up your trainer, coach, parents, adult riding friends, etc. due to your age. But kudos to you for wanting to have a job at your age. That is super.

You can only delete the content, not the thread.

Another poster here who says be careful, with your age and lack of experience it will be tricky to find somewhere suitable. And please, for your own safety and that of others, don’t over exaggerate your level of experience. I didn’t sit on a horse until I was 16 so you’re still miles ahead of me!

Thanks! I am a newer rider ( only a couple of years under my belt ) but I am still showing only regionals and stuff like that so I don’t think I need tall boots just yet.

First of all, 14 is not too old to attend riding camp! There are some great options available out there for older teens and more experienced riders. I went to a 2 week resident riding camp every summer until I was 16 and then worked there for two years. Your best bet for finding a place to volunteer or work would be through the connections you already have such as your trainer, vet, farrier, local tack shop, camps you attended before, or other riders at your barn. However, keep in mind that horse jobs are often lots of hard work and not great pay. If your main intention is to earn money for equipment, shows, clinics, etc. you might want to look into non-horse-related jobs. At 14 those options are still limited, but depending on your state laws some restaurants and retail stores may hire that young. You also have options like baby sitting (for people approved by your parents), paper routes (if those are even still a thing?), etc. Explain to your parents why you want to work and they can help you find a suitable option, especially since I’m assuming they will have to drive you there as well.

and for your information, I don’t over exaggerate my level of riding. That is what I am ACTUALLY doing.

Then why did you delete you initial post?

It would appear that you don’t like some of the comments you are receiving, so you picked up your marbles:) and left. But curiosity brought you back.

what are you talking about? I deleted my post because I thought that it wasn’t safe online. and I am done. I like the comments that I am getting except for the one by BWP about my experience. That is why I came back.

Wait, is it one year or a few years?

And @KingRocker4Life don’t take comments about your experience the wrong way. I didn’t see your original post, but we see a lot of people that DO exaggerate about what they can do, it’s not an attack on you or saying that you DON’T have that experience. Just that IF you did, to be careful, because people can get hurt that way. No one knows you or how you ride so we have to throw it all out there in case something does apply

Take a Red Cross first aid class. The first responder class includes how to deliver a baby, the babysitting class is aimed toward children’s issues, but you never know.

my College roommate was the barn/manager/horse care person at a camp which recruited heavily from that college. She had 6 to 10 kids in her cabin per two week session, but also a roommate who was the kids primary counselor. She was 20.

Two of my trainers have done day camps and recruit from among their existing staff and clients. You might try finding a day camp.

It was 4 years in the now deleted OP on this thread. Hence the confusion, as the other two quotes were only written yesterday.

@RainWeasley thank you for your kind response explaining that to me. I will be careful posting stuff on advice on how to ride. always share what my instructors says, not my opinion. Just what I think that my instructor would say if I asked her the same question.

@ReSomething I will do that anyway.

ok @BWP I am trying really hard not to take your posts about me personally but I don’t like you commenting on questions directed toward be or answering questions FOR me. I will do that myself thank you very much. I have a short term memory disorder and so I asked my mom how old I was since I started riding and she gave me those answers. I am sorry if they are all different but I just asked her and she gave me the FINAL answer:4 years under my belt. So, I am warning you and not joking. DO NOT answer questions for me and do not comment on questions directed towards me before I get a chance to answer. If you do then I will have to contact Mod1 and see if she can get rid of you. OK?!

Goodness.
Threats won’t do much to gain credibility here, or on any other forum.
If @BWP is attempting to answer a question for clarity, it does not reflect upon you. It was not answering “for you”.

Look at other threads, so you can see that this is simply how a “real time” forum works.

Please rethink your tone, as that is currently not giving a very good impression. No one here has attacked you.

@Moderator 1 please could you review this thread and see if you feel it is necessary for me to be got rid of. Many thanks.

There you go OP, to save you ‘warning’ me again.

Despite your shouting, profanity laden posts and general teenage stroppiness, I posted on here in an attempt to keep you from harm. I am old and I have seen too many brave, keen teenagers hurt or put off from riding. RainWeasley responded to my post (they quoted it) and so I responded to them. Forum etiquette suggests that a question after a quoted post is to that person :).

I would think twice before you post this kind of drivel here. Have you read the rules of the COTH forum? It would be wise to do so. Perhaps run your posts by your Mom before you hit the reply button.
