Camping in Michaux

I am planning a camping trip to Michaux- probably at the end of this month. I have all of the general camping info from DNR with the list of places to camp with horses, etc. But I was wondering if anyone here had any insider info- Are their poles for high lining, are portable corrals feasible, how difficult are the trails to navigate with just maps and not having been there before? I know that I will have to bring in all water and that it’s been a terrible rattlesnake year- any other helpful hints?

If Piney Mountain is one of your camping area options, that’s a nice flat grassy field and you could probably put up a portable corral there. I’ve seen people horse camping there before. It looks like this (excuse the control flag in the foreground  ) http://www.flickr.com/photos/svophotos/4105261858/in/set-72157622805682790

The Michaux is my home.
The best trails are off the Big Flat!
The forest is 85K ac’s.

Huge area for parking, plenty of trees for lines or setting up corrals. It used to be the start/end of the competitive rides there.

  The trails are awesome too.

There is water along both these trails.

You can call the Michaux office in Fayetteville for more details on camping at the Big Flat Area.
You;ll love it there!
and if you have some spare time …Gettysburg is only 12 miles east yet… the reenactments just left there (july 1-2-3)
Col Chamberlain stood at his post on the round top each year until his death at age 91 (1914)
fantastic story

Thank you- Big Flat was where I was thinking we would camp. Do you know if it is usually crowded at all? We’d probably go up on a Thursday and stay thru Saturday.
Your pics are gorgeous Bright Sky! I’ve always liked that area- I went to college in Chambersburg- and I miss it sometimes

I’ve ridden in Michaux and seen some camping site but sounds like others have some good suggestions. I just wanted to comment that the reenactment is actually this weekend for anyone thinking of going to Gettysburg. The 6th, 7th, and 8th. They like doing it over a full weekend in July and last Sunday only was the 1st. The battlefield trails last year werent very busy actually during the reenactment. The tourists were mainly over at the reenactment and us locals try to avoid Gettysburg during the first few weeks of July between the reenactment and bike week.

Furlong47 (or anyone else that would know)- is Piney Mountain the area near Pine Grove Furnace? I never know what to call it. That’s where I’ve mainly ridden in Michaux and where I grew up. I like those trails. I did not like the trails around Long Pine Reservior that my friend and I ended up on. Wayyyy too rocky.

Im glad you like the pictures… I had a blast on those rides… I trailered my horse home for a weeks vacation – just the 2 of us, and 85K ac’s to ride!

The parking areas of the Big Flat are huge; and Ive never seen over-crowding.

I used the one in the front(the original one) to house 55 riders for a Competitive Ride I managed with plenty of room for everyone, their rigs, and overnight festivities!

Then, theres the new area adjoining that; bigger yet! the links I offered are the 2 best trails – straight forward, good ground, easy to navigate, water – each about 4hrs (walk-jog).
You can also sponge your horses off at the Long Pine Lake… theres a nice (boat) landing for access —

I do recommend shoes --- most of the trails have been redone and are beautiful, but it is mountain ground, -- and this time of year (with this heat and lack of rain) the ground it hard. The roads are all gravel, white -- terrific for night riding!

The Big Flat area is 2050’ so it is cooler up there, about by 15*.
