Can a Moose be discouraged from hanging around?

Does anyone know of anything one can do to discourage a moose from hanging around with my mare and mini donkey? I have not seen it but its tracks are very clear. Its normal for them to be in the area. I’ve been here since 2007 and have never had one in my little barn or pasture.

It has knocked down my fence twice this week. It moved my mats all around. It is very interested in pawing through a large pile of old hay etc. that I had raked up but had not yet hauled off. I only have a wheelbarrow to use for this kind of thing so this takes a while. It has this pile ALL OVER. Huge mess. From all the moose tracks I’ve seen in my 58 yrs I would say this is a pretty large moose. Huge tracks.

I live alone. Im disabled with spine issues that I was born with which makes everything harder and I do not at all appreciate the extra work this animal is causing. I guess I am in hopes of someone knowing of something moose really hate that I could spread around maybe. Like how dried blood will keep some things away, I was hoping to solve it in a simple way. Of course I do recall the moose here in Vermont who fell in love with the hereford cow, Jessica, in the late 80’s and stayed for months.

If I know my mare, and I’ve had her since her birth 23 yrs ago, she is doing nothing to discourage this critter. I’m quite sure she is pretty welcoming to it. My donkey, whom I’ve had even longer, doesn’t seem to be bothered , upset, or acting any different.

If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

…find a hunter with a moose tag that needs to be filled?

Really hot electric fence. Really really hot. Just a single strand about 3’ high will be enough to make it move on. Easy to mount on step-in posts outside your perimeter fence, or on extenders mounted on your current fence.

Thank you. Just had another person tell me same thing. I will give this a try.

Call your local state game warden. They should be more than happy to help you out and they can possibly tell you what is attracting him to your property.

That ^ and also they may find that hunter for you, if it comes to that.

Wildlife can be dangerous, as if you surprise the moose when you go do chores and it decides to attack you.
Had a deer buck do that when I surprised them in the hay barn, eating out of the hay stacked in there.
Most ran out avoiding me, that one buck decided to attack, I got behind the door just in time, he meant to do harm.

By the way, I first read the title as mouse, not moose.

vermont is issuing only 13 permits this year. They are for bulls only and only in areas E1 and E2 which is not where I am. I had a guy stop here last night on his way home from work who says yesterday morning he saw my mare standing with the moose and said the moose was hanging his head over her back. Mare is in heat now as well. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Im very aware how dangerous this moose could be. Ive lived in Vermont, all my life. Thank you for pointing this out though. It is what i fear the most as i am not able to move very fast at all. When my grandaughters are here, which they are three days a week, in the summer, the 10 yr old is usually out there visiting with Echo and Jake by now. I have put a stop to this for now and When I go out I’ve been making lots of noise.

My daughter lives two miles away on her in laws dairy farm and they are having problems with moose and their fences as well. In their case they’ve been told if it keeps up they may be eligible for a nuisance permit allowing for the moose to be shot.

Me too. It clearly says moose but every time I read it I read mouse and then have to correct myself.

I think the idea of calling the game warden to discuss is a good one. It certainly can not put you any further back on solving your issue. If they have no advice no harm done, but they might have some thoughts. If nothing else it will help them realize there is a nuisance animal in your area that might have to be dealt with.

lol. Thankfully I’m quite adept at handling mice. Actually caught one yesterday with my dust pan and brush with two cats in pursuit across the kitchen floor. It was quickly deposited in the toilet and flushed away. Makes me feel bad but there has just been too many around here lately and opal and pearl are just learning to be mousers. Flushing can’t be any worse for the mouse than the torture the cats cause.

Yes, i likely will speak to one of them. I know a couple in the area. Especially now that i know the farm is also having trouble because they have a Gallagher fencer that will drop a cow right to her knees if she touches it. Wouldn’t that seem to be strong enough to discourage a moose if it was going to? Electric is what my fence is but it has been unplugged since March to save on electricity but I have plugged it back in. My guys do not require it to be on to stay put. I’ve done this for 25 yrs. But if the fence was taken down I know they would leave the field.

I don’t have a recommendation but this is the most northeastern and canadian problem ever. Moose are terrifying to me they’re so large. I hope you find a safe resolution!

I can understand the harm they cause, but I’ve never seen one in the wild, so it seems kind of neat to me they hang around your horse and donkey.

We always looked for them on vacation in Maine, but never saw one.
