Can anyone identify this grass

I think this is Red brome. So I’m going full warfare on the entire area.

Hi All,

Last year I had some gravel brought in and spread and now I have a new grass type growing along that area. It looks like something I want to eradicate but I’d like to know exactly what it is. Heavy seed head production, not much leaf per plant, burgundy to rust red, seed heads feel barbed and unpleasant as foxtail. Pic below.

Edited to add that I am located in the Willamette valley of Oregon.

I downloaded your first pic and dropped it in here:

Try it. And you are probably correct–some kind of brome.

Thank you for the site link, that’s a great resource! Barren brome is a close match. Whatever it is I hate it and it needs to leave before it invades my soft, tasty pastures. I spent a good part of the day mechanically removing it which means I’ll need to invent something sane to tell the normal people when they ask me about my weekend.

I cannot take credit for finding the website. It was posted in the Gardening thread in Off Topic by @sparkygrace. Very useful site!.

Where do you live?

Brome is an annual, and unless you need to reseed every single year to keep your pastures up to snuff, a preemergent applied fall and spring will put a huge dent in this thing’s ability to spread.

If your climate supports year-round germination, you might be in a bit of trouble though.

I live in the Willamette valley of Oregon. We have mild winters but winters none the less. A pre emergent sounds like a good plan. My pastures are pretty healthy and dense so no need to overseed in the near term.
