Can anyone recommend someone for dressage lessons in Los Angeles area?

Hello,

I have been a “re-rider” for 2.5 years. For the first 2, I did equitation/hunters. I started doing dressage last spring, which I’ve really enjoyed and feel like it suits me as a person and as a rider! Due to some personnel changes at my current barn, there is no longer anyone who can really focus on dressage with me. So I am looking for recommendations. I am comfortable and confident in the saddle, but still a beginner, schooling through the training level tests.

I do not own a horse, so it would need to be someone who has one I can ride for lessons. If they offer showing opportunities, that would be a plus.

Thank you!

Lennox

Do you have your own horse, or do you need a lesson horse? Are you looking to lease? You say you are still a beginner - do you feel comfortable cantering independently and steering simultaneously? Where do you live, and where do you work? Specific locations of barns will be dictated by where you are physically able to be with regards to traffic (assuming you work a typical 9-5ish job). Let us know those details and I can pm you some recommendations

I’ll send you a PM!

Hi! I will need a lesson horse. Would LOVE to lease, but would be looking at more of a half/partial lease situation.

Yes, comfortable cantering and steering simultaneously. I was coursing cross-rails before switching to dressage, if that gives you an idea. But beginner in the sense where…if I was asked to do a shoulder-in, for example, I’d need some step-by-step instruction on how to do that.

I live in the Valley, and I work nights. I prefer to lesson on weekday afternoons, to stay away from traffic. I am close to LAEC, Paddock Riding Club, Hansen Dam, Shadow Hills, etc., and comfortable going to any of those locations.

I saw these two ads on website. One is for full time lease though. I do not know the horses or the trainers. Sadly my trainer does not have a schooling horse, and my lessons are usually in the pm.

Lots in the area.
krissi at the paddock but mega pricy
jaye at Laec - grumpy and screams at her students
tes- riding school. Nothing fancy but lots of horses
Lehua at LAEC. Currently in FL trying to make the FEI lists. Her assistant is home and great. Not sure how many lesson horses but for sure lease ones available.
just be aware that not all are great even with shiny websites and nice decorations etc. really look at the programs. Watch lessons. Usually the busiest ones are the best for obvious reasons. The ones without much business have many times either I injured all the horses or scared the clients away :frowning:

Have you checked out anyone around Moorpark? Say Hilda Gurney or any of her past students like Jodie Cressman, I think.

Hilda Gurney has lesson horses in Moorpark at Keenridge.

Hilda is great! It’s about an hour from where the OP is describing. FWIW Lehua was Hilda’s assistant for 10 years

The OP lives in the valley, she’s likely to be equidistant from Moorpark and LAEC or even closer to Moorpark, and as an added bonus, could probably stay off the dreaded 101.

This is true (from another Southern Cali resident). The 101 is a nightmare certain times of the day, especially going in that direction (towards LAEC) and you can take the 118 to Moorpark from the Valley. Hilda is such an amazing teacher/trainer. She has a lot of patience and incredible knowledge. Her school horses are great too.

She does say Valley but also states close to LAEC. LAEC is an hour from Moorpark.
you can take the 5 to LAEC btw. I would certainly avoid theb101 most times of day but it doesn’t limit you from reaching LAEC.

Thank you for the responses! I just looked up Moorpark, and I’m about 30 minutes away. Totally doable. I’m sort of in a lucky little sweet spot in the valley where I’m pretty central to a lot of places. 30 minutes away from Moorpark, but LAEC is also 30 minutes away in the other direction

Will be doing some research and making some calls on Tuesday!
Thanks again!

Ahhh, thanks for the insight! I’ve been trying to contact Lehua but haven’t received a response. Makes sense now!

I’ve actually inquired about both of those horses before, and have seen one of them in action with a previous trainer! Unfortunately the arrangements they’re offering are a bit out of my budget at the moment :frowning:

Oh try her assistant directly!
im sure she’s easy to reach via email or phone.
Bryce Quinto.
or just go there and track her down. Trainers are notoriously bad at connecting probably because they can’t use their phone while riding.
happy riding!

How do you propose she gets to the 5 from the San Fernando Valley? She’s gonna have to go east at some point.

An added bonus for the non-So Cal crew; they can see how we refer to freeways as “the “insert number here”” and debate the best route anywhere!

Hello,

Just discovered this thread and similar to original posting, I’m an adult “re-rider” that has been taking regular lessons at a Hunter/Jumper barn in Los Angeles for the last year. My re-introduction to riding at the H/J barn has been wonderful, but I’ve become more interested in taking up dressage and possibly eventing. I’m currently researching and looking for a trainer whose primary focus is dressage, and bonus if they have some eventing in their background. I do not currently own a horse so I’d have to work with a trainer that has lesson horses. I am quite comfortable and confident in the saddle, but still in the process of rebuilding my skills. I’d love to work with someone that is calm, communicative, and constructive but also rigorous and challenging. At this point I’m not necessarily interested in showing, but rather more keen to improve my overall horsemanship and develop skills to become a more balanced, refined rider. I prefer low-key, friendly environments and barns that have a decent number of adult riders. I live close to Eagle Rock, and would be happy to stay close-ish to the east side, but also anything up in the area of Sun Valley, Lakeview Terrace, Shadow Hills, is pretty convenient for me.

Below is a list of trainers that I’ve found, but I don’t necessarily know too much about them beyond their websites/social media pages. So any first hand experiences or insights into these trainers and any other recommendations would be much appreciated!

Tricia Hamilton at North Middle Lake Ranch
Susann Regalmuto at Courtship Ranch
Gina Economou at Pepperwood Riding Center
Erika Volchik of Evo Dressage
Lehua Custer at Los Angeles Equestrian Center (But I believe she is still away from California?)

Thank you!!

I will pm you!

I know this thread is an older one but instead of starting a thread on essentially the same topic, I figured it’s best I resurrect this one.

Looking for a dressage trainer around the Valley as I live and work in/around San Fernando so I’d like to keep things close so as to avoid traffic.

I would need a trainer that has lesson horses as I don’t have a horse of my own and I don’t think I’ll be leasing for the foreseeable future. I’ve been riding for 5 years, started out with dressage for the first year and have been jumping for the last four years.

I was referred to a few different trainers at Middle Ranch and at Hacienda Del Valle and have spoken to a few already (all have been very kind and professional). I was also referred to CB Sporthorses in Sylmar.

Anyone who has had any experience with any of these facilities/trainers, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Any other recommendations would be appreciated also. Feel free to PM me as well
