Can Horses eat Celery?

Mine LOVE celery, totally love it. Bananas too. They even like leftover salad that has italian dressing. Pretty much any vegetable matter, except asparagus.

My old man hated celery. To the point he would eat around the celery pulp mixed with carrot pulp from a juicer. He also hated bananas. Loved apples, pears, carrots and sweet tarts

… my horse’s excitement over just about any food might have something to do with the fact that they’re both “inmates” in a drylot. So any real food is an exciting treat.

I had a debate with a co-worker who said that she never feeds celery because those stringy parts can make them choke. I disagreed, saying it was fine for them to eat it. If they can eat hay without choking I can’t imagine celery would be a problem!

Anyone else heard of this danger?

Additionally my horses also love bananas, peel and all

Ditto on the hay. Does she worry about them grazing on grass? 'Cause I would expect that to be a similar risk - perhaps even greater, given the sheer volume…

I tried with my horse. he’s not IR but I was trying to be careful. Nope. Piggy as he is, he did not consider that food. And this is the horse who is happily eating bamboo in his paddock!

I have never tried to feed my horse celery. I did have one that loved bananas more than life itself and I met one horse a long time ago that would maul you for chicken nuggets.

My horse was outraged that I would betray his trust by feeding him something so terrible.

I bet if you dipped it in salt they would sing a happy tune

Mine spit it out and made a face at me, then stomped off
