Can I attach a neck cover to a Wug?

I can’t decide if this is a brilliant idea or one that will result in a ripped hood. My horse’s midweight and heavy weight blankets are both Wugs. They do not have hardware to attach a neck cover. I’m wondering if I put the hood on first, then put the Wug on, if I could then rig up a D ring on the outside of both the hood and the Wug to run an elastic attachment over the spine to connect the two. My thought is that with the Wug on the outside of the hood, just one connection point over the spine should be able to keep the hood from sliding to either side, or my horse from disrobing, and that an elastic rather than a fixed connection would allow the hood to move with the horse’s neck as he grazes.

Has anyone done something like this? How did it work? My horse is no longer particularly abusive to his blankets and he’s top of the totem pole in his group of old cynical geldings, so his buddies aren’t killing his rugs, either.

You could try, but I think there still could be some twisting when the horse rolls, especially if you have heavy mud. I have a centaur neck cover that attaches to the matching blanket with three elastic straps and it is prone to twisting as the elastic has stretched over two seasons. With only one elastic strap, even with the Wug, I bet it would shift. And how would you make a connection without puncturing and compromising the Wug’s waterproof outer layer?

I have three blankets with removable necks, and a Rambo wug. Honestly I don’t see the need for a neck cover with the Wug; I’d rather buy a new blanket (on clearance) with designed neck cover attachments.

If the Wug goes over the neck cover, rain will get between the layers. There’s a reason they’re usually designed with the neck cover overlapping.

Sewing thru the outer layer will allow water through too, as you’ll pierce the membrane. Use sealant if you have to do that.

I’d experiment with a wide Velcro tab fastening each side of the Wug’s neck “peak”, at the edge, to the lining layer of the neck cover. Similar to how Rambo Duo etc neck covers attach.

That was my thought of how to get the D rings on- either stitched on and well sealed, or attached between strips of Velcro. I didn’t think of using them for the neck itself.

I’m not worried about rain- if it’s cold enough that he needs a neck, it’s too cold to precipitate. I was thinking inside over out because of the way the Wug peak stands up when the horse’s neck goes down to graze. IF I attached it on the outside of the rug I might throttle my horse. (That gap between top of horse neck and top of Wug neck is also why I’m thinking he may like a neck cover in coldest weather too.)

An actual purpose-designed rug with neck attachments will be in the cards if I find it on clearance.

I have a Rhino sheet and an HIB sheet that I use (can put liners underneath etc). I put Kensington plasticy fly sheet on over top that has D rings at the neck line. When I want to use my neck covers, I attach it to the D’s of the fly sheet
