Or do I need to invest in a larger clipper such as Listners?
Yes, I’ve done it. It just takes more time. I’ve body clipped horses with a Wahl Stable Pro also and I actually think that is a bit smaller than the A5.
Thank you! Do use the number 10 blades?
I’ve done trace clips with the A5. It probably isn’t good for the clippers, but can be done. I’d give the clippers periodic breaks to cool down. Yes, #10 blades.
I’ve done it for years, but just a blanket clip, and just one horse. I have a set of the Turbo A5 2-speed clippers, and use a wide blade in them to help speed things along.
Yes, just be sure you keep them oiled well and let them cool off regularly, for the horse’s sake also, they do get very, very hot and no dull blades, those may pull on the hair as much as cut.
Better if the horse doesn’t has a woolly mammoth coat, but a short, thin one.
Use T-84 blades for the best body clip evah.
A friend body-clipped my gelding once with two different sets of A-5s with 10 blades and rotated between them as they heated up. It took f.o.r.e.v.e.r. (he’s 16.2 and big-bodied) but looked fantastic when it was finished. As long as you have the patience for it (I was heading to a horse show so she made sure it wasn’t a half-assed job) it can be done well with the A-5s.
Thanks so much for all the great tips. I’ll get that blade lube to help keep it cool and turn it off on a regular basis.
Oh, I had another question. Do you use the same size blade all over the horse’s (or in my case, mule’s) body? I see that the andis T 84 blade is wider than the oster #10 blade. How easy is it to get around the legs and parts of the head. LOL, I guess I’d better do a search on youtube for bodyclipping. I could easily make my mule the local laughing stock of the neighborhood!
I use Wahl two speed clippers to clip 10+ horses. A full clip takes me 2.5 hours. I use 10W blades on the body (so it gets done quicker) and regular 10 blades on the legs. Get the Andis blade care solution and dip them in every 5 minutes or so wipe them off then put on oil. I buy my blades and the clipper solution at Farm n Fleet. I just pull their skin taught on the legs and face to get the little bits off. We are eventers though, so I usually leave the legs and the face in front of the cheekpieces with hair. I have only full clipped my client’s western pleasure horses for Congress.
I did it a few times… Horse must be super clean and blades sharp. It’s helpful to have a second set of blades to rotate out when they get hot.
I body clipped my OTTB this past spring with the Andis 2 speed. I started clipping her with my Oster Clip Masters, but they are kind of loud and were making her antsy. For the majority, I used the T-84 blades and then smaller spaces I used the #10 blades.
I body clip with my andis acg2’s using a T-84 for the body and a number 7 for legs and face. I like to leave hair just a little longer on the legs for protection from cold since the blankets don’t cover down there.
I’ve done it with the A5. Expect to need to have your blades sharpened afterwards, however - especially if the pony isn’t perfectly clean.

I clip a LOT of horses, and use the T-84s over the entire body, ears to tail to hoof. The A5’s will get the job done if you’re patient (and the horse is too), but they’ll be slow, may leave lines, and it will be hard on the clippers. See if you can’t get some body clippers, or the Andis ACG’s (two speeds are wonderful, and the new Andis 5 speeds are incredible!) to make your job easier.
FYI - I had a talk w/ Oster Equine Cust. Service, becuz whenever i trace clip with the a5 2-speed clippers, they get so hot, and spraying cool lube doesn’t cool them down. I’ve always had the big oster body clippers and spraying cool lube cooled them down instantly, so I could go on clipping.
The Oster lady told me that spraying cool-lube on the a5’s wouldn’t work to cool them down becuz……can’t remember exactly….but they just got too hot and the only solution was to switch blades or turn them off for a while.
(Maybe someone can re-phrase that in clipper technical terms).
My question is: where do you get your blades sharpened? And is there an easy way to know if they are dull or not . thanks.

You know your blades are dull when the blades start to drag in the coat, or stop clipping altogether, and cleaning doesn’t make a difference. There are loads of blade sharpening places out there. Ask around locally for suggestions, and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding someone.
