I assume it was the best option…This is quite amusing though! You can basically figure out who is going to come off before they go off/down the bank. Great video!
I think that was probably the least worst area to cross. If you check out any hunting videos on you tube, you will see some areas that are way worse. It appears to me after watching the videos that double ditches and stone walls are quite common.
I think I’d be going home!!
The nature of man made things like fences and drainage ditches is that they tend to be pretty much the same for a significant length. The entire field they are trying to get into might have exactly that for the entire side. If it’s a boundary between two separate farms there might not be any vehicle traffic so no motivation to build a bridge.
Well, one can see where the great temperament and legendary ‘fifth leg’ of the Irish horse comes from! Probably half the horses in the video are aged 4 or 5 and will be for sale.
I bet that clipped chestnut wishes he could sell his rider! Field of Nightmares would be a good caption!
Seriously, I love that video. Thanks for posting, Field of Dreams. (I know I haven’t answered your question; I do like the video, though.)
Why they picked HERE to cross?
Probably because in that part of the hunt country every field would be bounded by a similar double bank. If they didn’t cross there it would be just as bad somewhere else. All part of the craic.
RPM- I agree with you, that horse is very tolerant!
One looked like he wanted to drink it.
It is the perfect caricature of fox hunting though sadly it is real. People share it on my FB wall about once a week asking “is THIS what you do?” and I reply “nope, not at all.”
I have seen this video multiple times, it tends to make the rounds on COTH.
Without fail my favorite is the big bay at 1:18ish, who just kinda…slithers down into it. Sensible sort, that one!
Holy $#!t!
And that’s why no martingales… hard for the horses who fell against the far bank to get themselves sorted out enough to get their feet under them.

Lots of running and bib martingales but not standing ones. Alternative view about safety of such on this side of the pond.
