Can we discuss the "thumbs up thumbs down" thing?
I’m fine with thumbs up. Dislike thumbs down. The fact that it’s anonymous is just cowardly, anyway.
agree… i think “liking” is fine, but it should show who is doing what - and no “dislike” we al;ready have gangs that wander the streets causing all sorts of ruckus - why give them one more weapon?

I don’t get how the thumbs up and down works, well actually I do get it but I don’t understand how AmmyByNature’s original post has 3 out of 6 members appreciated this post… what about the other three, does that mean that they did not appreciate the post? So if I were to thumbs up and down it, it would then say 4 out of 8 members appreciated this post?

I’m confused and I’ve worked hard today, I might just pour a gin and go sit in the sun

Okay, so I tried that and now I know. I also now know that I can either appreciate or not appreciate a post, but I can’t do both. Cin cin folks!

If you thumbed up a post that current has 3 out of 6 members appreciated this post, it would then say 4 out of 7 members appreciated this post. If you thumbed down that post it would say 3 out of 7 members appreciated this post.
Not sure where you get 8 from…darn new math.

OK, who’s the smart a$$?..

Am I the only one that’s tempted to run about the forums, randomly opening threads & even more randomly clicking the red & green thumbs :tickled_pink: - no time to read :nonchalance:

 • how is this crazy dude :nonchalance: an expression of “nonchalance

having an air of easy unconcern or indifference

He’s not straining to make his neutral facial expression.

Yeah, he looks like he’s straining alright…

We warmbloods are pretty ticked off (where’s that emoticon?) about getting a thumbs down on the political thread. Ok so we wandered off of the secret santa thread, but we have a right to our own political views.

We just need to find the person who gave us the thumbs down and roll his/her house with toilet paper. Or we’ll pay some other horses to do the rolling while we watch.

There should be some contest to see who can get the most thumbs down.

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

For more simplified horse-related terminology, how about just “yay/neigh”? Or even “hay/neigh?”

I think the thumbs up option is somewhat useful as a time saver, and a way to cut down on the one word replies like “Yes!” or “^This!!!+++”

The thumbs down seems a bit juvenile, but on the other hand, I can’t imagine getting too worked up about it. I don’t expect everyone to agree with everything I post. The fact that it’s anonymous means I can just tell myself that whoever gave the thumbs down must be an idiot.

Still wondering if when the e mail notification is working again (as it certainly hasn’t been for PMs since the upgrade), will the notices for bad and good result in e mails as well? And can one opt out if so? I want to still get e mails for new PMs, but not the good/bad as that will annoy me quickly. I’d just as soon not get the notices (for good/bad) here either, so if one can opt out of that, I’m all for it.

I don’t understand the “notification” thing. I had one this morning, and clicked on it, but nothing happened. How do I find out which post I made that was “appreciated” by someone? My ego demands it!

That said, I will just add that I agree with all the posters wanting to get rid of the thumbs-down feature. I belong to another message board which used to have a ratings system with 1-5 stars for posts. Everyone’s overall rating appeared next to their screennames on all posts. It was ridiculous how worked up people got about that and how protective they were of their ratings. People with a vendetta against a particular poster would go in and find old posts and rate them with one star just to trash the person’s overall rating. The forum finally got rid of the star system, thank goodness.

I guess I can understand the rationale for the thumbs-up; however, the thumbs-down should go. It can’t serve any useful purpose and will only cause drama. IMO, of course.

In posting about the transgender woman in the OT forum, I got a solid 15 or more “bad” ratings. I also got a few dozen “good” ratings, but that’s rather irrelevant. People are using the thumbs down as an excuse to be negative without taking five minutes to state their opinion or why they disagree. In reality none of my posts are “bad”, there are just people that don’t agree with me. There are plenty of people I don’t agree with in the thread but I didn’t give anyone a thumbs down… I actually took the time to write a reply and explain my opinions.

I’m sorry, but the thumbs down has got to go. People having different opinions does not make one of them “bad”, but all this feature is going to accomplish is making that happen.

ETA: In skimming the thread, it seems that while the two sides (for and against) are quite even number wise, the “for” side has accumulated a lot more “bads”. So what does this mean? That there are more posters on the against side that aren’t posting in the thread and instead giving everyone bad reviews? Or that the for side that is arguing for equality and acceptance prefers to use their intellect to make their point (whereas the agains side has to say everyone’s “bad” to help with their point)?

Who knows, it’s anonymous. But this kind of speculation is going to be another byproduct of the “bad” reviews. We’re grown adults here, most of us already hiding behind the computer anyway. Let’s keep it so that people who disagree have to actually post such instead of giving them an even more anonymous way to be negative.

sigh

Ironically, it is probably on the Off Topic forum that the thumbs will be most used, which might be useful to avoid some bickering, but it is also probably where people’s feedback isn’t as important on a lot of topics. I might be interested in knowing how many people “don’t appreciate” my training methods (although I’m really not unless they want to have a discussion), but I already know there are plenty of people who people don’t appreciate my political and social views.

I would find emoticon buttons much more useful: +1 for

(I’m half-joking… I’m not really suggesting there should be individual buttons for all of those, but they would get the point across much more clearly!)

If you want to bicker, I hazard to guess that giving someone a “thumbs up” is NOT going to satisfy you…
I want to see how that works–someone thumbs down this post, please? :)
Simkie are you seeing the actual thumbs up/down on your posts?
We’ve debated the thumbs down option as well, for many of the reasons already discussed on this thread, so we decided to institute it as a trial. We can easily remove it, so let’s see how people use it and like or dislike it, and we’ll be happy to reevaluate its inclusion later.

Feel free to continue discussing it here.

Thanks!

I don’t mind it, perhaps because it is confusing.
What does it mean “4 out of 7 members appreciated this post” ?
4 Thumbs up and 3 thumbs down?

When I click on notifications it gives me a bunch of numbers and I have to click on each and every number?
Example: 12345 Bad
Example: 54321 Good
Example: 32145 Good And so on.

That’s all I get. I had 26 notifications. I’m really not that curious to click on 26 numbers that bring me to each 26 individual posts I type, just to see how many members appreciated the post. Or is there a setting, I’m not seeing?

The ads are crazy. They are all over the Private Messages. There isn’t an “X” to click them off. I couldn’t even edit my profile. Ads all over the place. Again, there isn’t an “X” to get rid of them.

Thanks.

Yes, that’s how the tabulation of + & - ratings currently appears. If 1 out of 3 users appreciated, then 1 thumbs up and 2 thumbs down.

Yes, the post rating screen that the Notifications drop-down menu takes you to apparently keeps a record of all the reviews you received, with the most recent ones listed first. You can click on any of the numbers to see which post it was.

When you’re viewing any of your posts, if it has received a thumb from anyone, you’ll see the “2 of 2 posters appreciated” notation. If it hasn’t been rated, you won’t see anything at the bottom.

Regarding the ads you’re seeing, that’s not normal. Are you viewing the site using Internet Explorer? If so, please be sure that the compatibility view mode is OFF. You can do that by clicking the torn paper icon up by the URL field where our web address appears at the top of the page.

If that does not help, please let me know what browser and version you are using to view the site.

Thanks!

Still not liking the thumbs, and particularly the downer bad thumb.

The notifications part is just plain annoying. And since I got my second notice of a good thumb, I see that the previous one (that I’d already viewed the notice on) is still there, so it seems the notice never goes away. So for those of you getting multiple notifications, I can see they will pile up and be just irritating. I like to clean things up, deleting my PMs, for instance, once addressed or resolved. So having this goofy list of numbered links to my posts that have been good and bad thumbed and never seems to go away…well, one big bad thumb for that!

Thank you Mod 1, I appreciate it. I use Google Chrome to AOL.

Think this is, frankly, the most passive aggressive and idiotic thing I’ve seen on a BB in terms of features. Can I turn off my notification so I don’t have to be bothered when other people are thumb clicking my posts?! It’s just annoying…
