Can we have an adult re-rider support group?

I would love it! PM me with more details please!

WIExpat, I hope to be in Flint Hill (near Warrenton) in February or March for foxhunting…perhaps you’d like to come out and car follow and meet the hunting folk? Thers’ lots of horse talk, and shopping for horsey stuf fin Middleburg, and if we’re lucky, a good afternoon at the races (and for me, a new hat!)[/QUOTE]

Took the plunge today now I’m not just a re-rider but a horse owner too! I feel like there are so many cob-webs to clear out.

Once I was the trainers darling, now I am an “old” amature. In my mind I’m still 17 and willing to ride anything, and able to handle any horse health issue(thanks pony club).

Now people look at me suspiciously am I one of those crazy ladies or do I know what I’m talking about… - it’s wired having to prove myself in the only thing I’ve ever been really good at.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Ps . It’s all worth it and I am so happy to be back on a horse

Congrats BreFly22! I would LOVE to own my own horse again. In the meantime, I am trying to be content with a shared lease  I wanna see a pic!

I totally relate to what you are saying! I find myself explaining to everyone at my barn who I am and what my background is. Ultimately, I guess it doesn’t matter but it is weird to feel that urge to prove myself. Things are easier when u are younger, but I almost feel more excited now cuz I am really working for it  and it is more of a challenge.

Welcome to all, and yes, now I’ve had a fall…

goody! more and more and more members!

Congrats! And, oh, this is my life exactly! I just don’t remember when I stepped through the looking glass, and came out on the other side!

OK, so I got christened this morning, and can now totally relate to everyone else here with ouchies - mine’s a hurt tushie. Thank God that’s where I landed, though!!:wink:

I’ve been stubborn, and B has been too. I know I can some day get this horse settled down. We have gone through all the exams, has a custom saddle, monitored by lameness vet, etc. There is a dressage trainer and H/J visiting at this barn.

But lately, the weather has been electric, new snow on the ground, everyone feeling great. Because of conditions beyond our control, turn outs have not been regular lately. In the indoor we do 15 minutes under saddle. Walk and trot. The suggestive bumping and squealing begins to get underway. I stop, wait, and begin again. Stop, wait, and begin again.

Well, that doesn’t work…
Have learned my lesson! Previously could handle one or two, but four in a row was not fair!:frowning:

I was reminded of the feeling, as you are in mid air, oh, s**t, how am I going to land?

And even though I’ll be cleaning all day, rather than sit still & let it set in, I am ecstatic, that I am relatively otherwise ok. Phew!:yes:

Back to the drawing board. B won’t be going to anyone else, but I may be looking for new digs. At least some kind of change up in the routine.

And in the meantime, I am signing up for Hunter’s Rest in March, too…!:yes:

Sorry you have a sore bum! I suggest painkillers and wine.

Hey all, wanted to serve as a small inspiration (I hope!) to the less-than-stellar-confidence re-riders.

I had my first lesson post-op today, 8 weeks. I rode a horse I have never ridden before, and I JUMPED! It was a TEENY crossrail but I had to do it. The first few were bad (my part) but the last one was incredible!

I’m pretty happy. So if I can do it, you all can too, when you’re ready!!!

Welcome to all the new members!

SpacyTracy - you are my new inspiration! My new goal is for Finn and I to shake things up a little - go new places, see new things as much as possible. This after my “speshul” tb spooked at a chair under a tree. Yes said tree does not usually sprout chairs, but really.

So, today’s ride was short and instead of getting off in the ring and leading him back to the barn, I rode him back - and took a slight detour. We walked through the jump field (omg - new scary horse eating jumps!) and did not die and then walked up and down the drainfield hill. Calmly, quietly.

This was on 4 hours sleep after doing am feed and turn out, have breakfast, start cleaning the barn, realize one of the neighbors has pretty much set everything on fire in the woods/brush that runs along the side of the driveway to the farm. FD came (after we called!) and took care of it.

Awww, congrats, spacytracy!! I haven’t done any kind of jumping since the summer, but look forward to doing it again soon.

I hope like hell I have a good few lessons this week. I’ve already decided to canter my usual guy this week. It’ll be our first time, but I think I’m ready.

That did not go so well.

Horse #1 was a morbidly obese unshod Appendix. My trainer tried him last Saturday and liked him, but when we got there she got on and he was so lame she couldn’t even tell in which legs.

Horse #2 was a pretty WB mare who is just too green for me to feel safe on. Also my trainer and I have different ideas about mare management, so it’s not even worth it.

Horse #3 was an impossibly lazy TB that my trainer loves for reasons I can’t understand. I think she thinks I’m awful and will never get much better and should therefore have a mostly dead horse whose default setting is standing still.

I’m extremely uncomfortable on a lazy horse. I know a lot of people are scared of the horse taking off, but my biggest fear is a horse stopping before a fence and me getting chucked through it. I want something where if I get scared before a jump and stop riding, the horse will be like “ok lady, I’ve got it from here.”

That was my first horse exactly. If I pointed him at a fence he would just jump it, no questions asked. And he cost half what all these other horses do.

This is just so frustrating. I feel like I’m never going to find a horse I love because people are making all these assumptions about me and not even showing me the type I’m interested in.

Ok all done. Thought you could all use a big glass of whine on a Sunday evening

Bonnie, I’m with ya. I am so over a horse that you have to teach. I want point and shoot and if a monkey was riding, it would jump the course. Its out there, I promise, and sometimes can be found for a song. Put your name out there to people.
Jaslyn, awesome job on conquering the scary walk!!
Opus, you got this, I know it! Sit tall, relax your back, and do an audible “ahhhh” and I guarantee you"ll be fine!! Riding a really green, sensitive horse taught me that!

BonneAmmie, don’t worry. Finding the right horse takes time. After all, the right horse can be with you longer than the wrong husband

I see the three horse you tried were horses that are usually tall. Do you need a tall horse? If not, haveyou considered a large pony, like a Connemara? They can be brave, bold AND reliable.

Good luck!

Hello girls! I’ve been offline and crazy busy for the last two months but the pony and I are finally back in action. He was lame for a month after I moved him, so we just took a break and then I had a series of seriously busy times + sick family members so things just got away from me.

We had our first ride back tonight. Sure, we just walked around the arena because it was 14 degrees and he’d been in all day and his eyes were bugging out of his head…but we did have a lovely (if a bit active) walk. I will be wearing my new “flack jacket” (my hubbie bought me a safety vest for Christmas) next ride so maybe we’ll do something daring…like trot…

Glad to see you all again! I’ve got a lot to catch up on - go us adults!!!

Sorry BonneAmmie – don’t worry though, it was just your first day looking.

Congrats spacytracy! So glad you are back in the game after your surgery.

Tajar and I are still having some communication issues. I think that his training has progressed, and mine hasn’t much the last few months thanks to work. And I am not confident enough to correct him when we start heading down the wrong path. Anyway – the plan is to spend the next couple of months riding Tajar in the pasture for fun, but doing arena work on my trainer’s uber-trained schoolie so I can work on my seat and confidence.

I’m a little frustrated, but I know it will be fine. Just have to work through it.

Now for the real whine – I’ve been looking forward to spending the holiday tomorrow at the barn (so rare for me to get 3 days of riding in a row). I get an email at 9:00 pm asking if I can help another section at my firm on a rush project tomorrow. UGH. Really no way to decline without giving the impression that I am not a team player, so into work I will go. Hopefully I can get out early enough to make it to the barn for a short lesson before it gets dark. I can’t wait for the days to be longer – giving me another couple of hours of light when situations like this arise.

CVPeg – hope your bum is feeling better soon! Get some arnica gel (they sell one at Whole Foods call Arniflora that is good) to help with the bruising.

Welcome BreFly22, and congrats on your new horse! We can all relate to the “where did the teenage me go” issues.

Tarheel - I feel your pain. Thanks to a Judge who has absolutely no concept of my life outside the office (it’s all about me, right!), my boss and I have to meet a client in the office this morning to prep for a trial on Wednesday. Like you, I intend to be at the barn as early in the afternoon as possible!

Rode the green mare yesterday at the barn’s weekly IEA practice. I like to ride her with the group to give her experience. She was a good girl. BO-team coach put several of the riders on her to hack around as she is considering using her is a class at the IEA shows the team is hosting next weekend. She was a very good girl and the girls loved her–I was proud. I’ll be excited to see how she does at the show. I’ll have a great view as I will probably do the announcing. She is officially for sale :frowning: although no one has come to look yet.

Spacytracy–congrats on the jumping!

Tarheel, I commiserate about work. Our semester begins tomorrow, so reality is striking with a vengeance.

BonneAmmie, sorry you didn’t find your horse. He will eventually find you–I feel sure of it!

OneGrayPony–what kind of vest did you get? I want one but am afraid to order online. I would really like to try before buying, but I don’t know how to make that happen. We have no decent local tack shop, and I don’t know anyone who rides in a vest. Maybe I will check out Aiken. They have some racetracks in the area.

Dewey can I ask what you do? You said “semester” and I work for a university, so I thought hmmm…

Our students came back yesterday but today is their advising day, so I’m holed up in my office trying to get all my stuff done.

So my new (old) saddle was delivered. And I’m DYING to get home to check it out! I’m like 20 min from work, so I could go home on my lunch break and look at it, but I am going to try to resist the urge because I despise driving - its so boring.

This is why I have stuff delivered to my office - I need instant gratification too much for stuff to be delivered to my house during the business day!

When my County was delivered, my office smelled like a tack shop – heavenly!

spacytracy, I teach writing at a university. How about you?

Student Affairs.

Well, have a great semester!
