Can we have an adult re-rider support group?

OTTB - yay for a good ride!

Pancakes - Yikes! I’ve never broken a bone, so I have no suggestions other than soaking in a epsom salt bath.

My daughter decided (at the last minute) to stay at her friend’s house and swim rather than go to riding lessons today. So, I rode her lesson horse. OMG… I had to WORK to get him to trot and stay at a trot. I think I’ll stick to my lesson horse from now on. My confidence is returning quickly and my trainer said my form is much more relaxed and correct.

In other news… my husband just bought a welder. I see a fancy new run-in for my horse being built real soon! I should start planning for pipe fencing. Haha!
I chose one direction, he chose another…and I hit the fence. HARD.

Has anyone ever broken/cracked a rib before? I know there isn’t much to be done which is why I haven’t gone to the Dr yet, but any tips/suggestions/confirmation that yes, that’s what I did?
Ow - so sorry, Pancakes! And I just posted in Off Topic Day about what my achy hip might mean? (And like you, can ride ok, just walking is trouble…) But congrats on the results!!

Perhaps in this thread we all need Rx icons for when we’re not exactly 100%…?:sigh: …returning to smilies when we’re ok?

So it was a beautiful day today - got to the barn first thing to turn out B in the indoor and he didn’t even run around and roll. Returned 2 hours later, got tacked up with the rest to hit the trails, and 4 steps outside the driveway the pawing started - precursor to “buck and take off”. Soooo, it was off the horse, lead him back to the indoor, and work him under saddle…ho hum. Some day…

I’ve really been thinking that I need to get my core in shape and I think that will help me. But WHEN? I have a 3 year old, a job, a house, and the horses. Oh, and a husband too. lol\end quote

OMG, you’re me! I have a 3 year old (human), husband, job, house, etc., and without a trainer I’m afraid to jump over 2’6". Well, the part about being afraid to jump doesn’t sound like you. I can’t address all the issues, but I can tell you how I sneak in core workouts:

 1. Look on youtube for kettlebell workouts or kettlebell cardio. All of them address your core as well as other muscle gI put the 3 year old at his play table with legos, tell him to steer clear of Mommy when she’s swinging iron things, and do a 10-20 min. workout 3x/week. It makes a difference. If you don’t have a kettlebell, use the toddler  Seriously, though, you can safely clean and press a toddler and they like it. Mine weighs32#. You can also use dumbbells, gallon jugs filled with sand, etc.

 2. I don’t know how many farm chores you have to do, but if you’re stacking hay and mucking, you can handle the kettlebell thing.

 3. Look for Sparkpeople’s Coach Nicole on youtube also - she has several short, effective core workouts. You can do them in the living room before your child gets up, after he goes to bed, or while he’s eating breakfast. They are 6-10 minutes at most.

 4. This is a killer 8-minute ab workout, and 3x/week will make a difference quickly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkKCVCZe474

 5. Check out this dressage trainer and her core workout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQIo_qzJksc

In addition to the other challenges you listed, which I understand, I am constantly trying to keep my core strong and I can only ride 3 (maybe 4) times a week.

It’s Sunday and time for a workout report. I did exercise three times this week–did one 30-min bike ride and rowed for 30 minutes the other two days. I need to supplement this with some core exercises, so the posts above were very timely!

I rode Sky today and had a very good ride. She jumped quietly and softly over some two-foot jumps, including some flower boxes and gates. What a good girl!

I’m feeling better today (day 3 since the fall) but MAN is it hard to get out of bed in the morning. I was in so much pain yesterday at work and I have to work for 3 more days (12 hr shifts). Gotta keep on the ibuprofen… But I can’t wait to get back in the saddle later this week if I am feeling better. I am determined to get better at jumping and seeing our distances!

CVPeg and others who are achy and sore, hang in there! Be kind to yourselves. Congrats to those who had good rides this week too!

Pancakes- hang in there! How terrible :frowning: I hope you get to feeling back to normal soon.

So this weekend, since my boy’s on stall rest for a few days, I rode my trainer’s new 4-year-old. Only, I was hoping to have the quietest ride of my life, because despite the age, this girl is DEAD QUIET. Like “bludgeoning to even walk” kind of quiet. However, after about 10 minutes of kick ride, I half halted her when her trot got super fast for some reason, and she took that as the biggest insult she’s ever received. She bucked a few strides and then bolted into a full-on runaway gallop. The more I tried to stop her, the faster she went. And she’s so unbalanced that a one-rein stop would have tipped us both over. I finally got her to stop, walked her to the barn and handed her to my trainer. She got on, and she went back to dead pony. I got back on, and still dead pony. I have NO clue what happened, but it scared me half to death!

Pancakes, sorry you are not doing so well!

PaintedHunter - sorry for the scary runaway. That is my WORST fear.

I rode again yesterday, had a very good ride, and even jumped over a crossrail a couple of times. Probably not the smartest move coming off of a month hiatus and surgery, but I know my boy and besides, he’s close to the ground! haha

I hope everyone is enjoying this weather!

My goals this week are to clip my mini. Which might be an insurmountable obstacle. Yesterday I did a 12" section and wore out two clipper blades. He is SO thick. Even after clipping the longest (4") hair, he still has about an inch or so left. Its ridiculous. If you have never clipped a mini, you have no idea how difficult it is. Its like sheep, mixed with bear and wooly mammoth.

Pancakes, you are making me even more determined to get a safety vest. I am now leaning toward the Racesafe. It meets all safety standards here and in Europe and actually looks comfortable.

Hope you heal fast!

Well spacytracy, luckily for me, she’s a very unmuscled 4-year-old, and she coulnd’t hold her gallop for long voluntarily!

Eeek…I can just see this happening to me, PaintedHunter. I am not afraid of my mare, but she is kind of spooky and is easily freaked out by new things.

I just tried ordering my Racesafe vest from a tack shop in England. Picked out the one I wanted and measured myself. Even with the shipping, it’s cheaper than Dover, and I have the option of getting an extra small in a short length, good for me as I am only 5’ tall. But the website said my credit card had an invalid number! Frustrating!! I guess I will have to email or call them.

Pancakes how are you feeling?

Holy cow - have the week at work from hell and I miss all kinds of things!

Pancakes - sorry you got broken, hope you feel better soon, but watch out for a punctured lung!

Spacy - glad you are riding again!

Deamin - I know exactly how you feel on the trail ride issue. Everybody that was at the barn a few weeks ago took off on a trail ride. I started to go, but the wind, the flapping flag and my nerves quashed that idea. Thanks to me, and the fact that he was last, horsie said no way. Must work on this!!

I actually got to ride Saturday and Sunday last weekend! Since I had not been able to ride at all for 2 weeks, it went very well. Now, to get out to the barn after work - that’s my goal!

I have a new addition to my “fur family”. I adopted a 5 yo female Weimaraner last week. She is a hoot - very sweet, very willing, not much training other than sit. So, we have some stuff to work on. My cats are confused - she looks like the last one, but isn’t. The dog is confused about the cats - not chasing, but very wary.

I meant to get pics of the filly last weekend, but didn’t. Will try again this weekend. She has gone from almost 10.2 to just about 11.1 in about 3 weeks. She now has teeth and is taking food away from mom!

I just ordered my vest. It worked this morning for some reason! I’m very excited. I got a pleasant surprise–the tack shop deducted VAT, so I got an even better price. It’s not cheap, but I got it for $235 including shipping to the US. The same vest at Dover is $285 and shipping would be added on top of that. In addition, the UK tack shop has many more choices in sizes and colors.

Here’s what I ordered:

Will let you know when it arrives and how it is to ride in.

Congrats on the new pooch, jaslyn! Am looking forward to your pictures.

Tomorrow’s my last day of this work ‘week.’

Day 15. Although I did get 1/2 a day off on Saturday, so I shouldn’t complain much. :sigh:

ANYWAY … I should/may be able to ride this week. Trainer No. 1 is hosting a show this weekend, and Trainer No. 2 may take some of her kids there. Thursday’s looking like a good day to ride my lease possibility and then Monday on my normal guy, unless he gets used a ton at the show and needs a break.

And as soon as I get some sleep and rest and get this week behind me, I’ll be looking for personal trainers/gyms so I can start focusing on working out and losing some weight. It’s ridiculous how much (physically) I don’t do. I drive 45 minutes to and from work. I sit at a desk all day at work. I then go home and sit at my desk there. AND when I ride, I’m still sitting. Funny, huh?

So, I need to find something to get me moving and working muscles other than my butt. My core is weak, and my lower back has been hurting from me sitting at my desk (12-14 hours/day) at work so much.

Well, I just got home from a 3 hr stint at the barn. Nothing special with B. Just another day longeing, but he didn’t do anything crazy, just still a little beany, but that’s ok. (Oh, and by the way, what does it mean when your horse is starting out on the longe at a trot, trots faster and faster, and turns his head to the right, keeping it there looking right at you, as if to say “is this what you want?”)

So was at the barn a long time since no one else was around and it was beautiful out. So I got to futz around with him, and work on beginning to pull his 18" winter mane, work on getting more hair and hidden mud off him, clean out my tack box, etc. (Of course my sister is in town, and my house is a disaster, but who cares? :D:lol:) Since it’s so warm out, I brought the dog into the barn - she’s an Irish Wolfhound, and sometimes horses are really unsure about her, so I often leave her behind, or in the car if I won’t be long. B was pretty much a doll on the crossties as usual. And I passed him a mint treat every once in a while for being so good. Toula lay on the ground at the barn entrance, and I felt like I was almost in some kind of novel…

But what was so funny, was that after all that time working on B, I then put him back in his stall - where he usually just ignores me, then gets into his hay, etc. Well, as I kept working on the tack box and around the barn, B kept coming to the door, and looking for more attention! I really had to ignore him several times, and I know it wasn’t the mints, since I often have stuff on me. I think he really loved the lonnnng one on one, and wanted more! When I stepped inside his stall to tweak a couple of final things, he was such a big baby.

Gotta love a horse like that…

PaintedHunter - good for you for hanging on! Sure you don’t want to visit me and teach B a few things? At least you stayed on!

Dewey - I’ve thought about the vest, but almost think I need the one that inflates - plus I’m realllly short waisted, so not sure what would work.

Jaslyn - congrats on the Weimeraner! Just recently a local kennel was raided nearby, and that was one of the breeds this bozo had. They are such nice sporting dogs.

Pancakes - you are such a trooper. Hope each day is gentler.

Opus - right now, my back has had new kinds of pains since the last fall, so have to take it easy, and boy, am I aware that I could use some extra. You are so right about the core stuff. Don’t know how I would do with that kind of desk time - good luck with your goals!

Everyone, have a great rest of your day, or lovely evening!

Peg, loved your description of your horse begging for more attention!

About the vest, the Racesafe people make a hybrid vest you might be interested in, but it costs a lot more. It actually looks wearable, though. I think some of the other inflatables have to be worn over a regular safety vest, which seems like a lot of bulk to me. Anyway, here’s the link:

http://www.treehouseonline.co.uk/product/201

They make sizes with a short back, which might work if you’re short-waisted. That’s what I ordered.

Dewey - cool vest! I have Tipperary (the standard one) that a friend gave me and it’s served me well so far so I think I’m going to stick with it for now. At some point though, maybe when I’m jumping more, the vest you got looks like what I’d like to go with.

CVPeg - your story was awesome  I’ve had a few nights like that and think those are some of the best: when you’re the only one left at the barn and it’s just you and your horse enjoying some quiet, lazy, one-on-one time. Mine will just follow me around the arena and we go on little walks, just being lazy. I enjoy those times!

Pancakes - glad you’re feeling a bit better. Take it easy!

Jaslyn - congrats on the new addition … and yes, show some pictures of the filly! Can I ask how your horse responded to the attempted trail? Mine had a nice (but short!) attempted bolt back to the barn. I stopped it pretty quick! Now we have to get over my nerves to try again!

My news: had a “jump” lesson (well, mostly flat/ground poles with a xrail thrown in at the end… what can I say, I’m starting back at the beginning) on Sunday and a dressage lesson today. Both went extremely well and I am thrilled at how well both of us are doing. I got such good feedback from both instructors and some great exercise ideas. I feel so much better about our riding and overall progress after just a week an a half of lessons!

dreaminOTTB, I’m happy you had a great lesson! That’s what it’s all about…to start over and make progress. It’s a good feeling.

I’d love to see pictures of the new filly, the Weimaraner, and even the fuzzy wooley mammoth mini! The vests also do sound like a really good idea. I wonder how hot they would be to ride in, though. Definitely food for thought. This is a dangerous sport, after all.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes!
I’m feeling better today and yesterday. I start out each day sore but I take my 800 mg ibuprofen first thing and by the time I get to work I can walk. I still can’t laugh or cough, and I can’t lift anything heavier than 5 lbs with my left arm. Even cats are too heavy. :frowning: Luckily my techs at work are understanding. My butt cheek is BLACK from the bruise. It’s ugly. I hurt. I come home and take a painkiller and life is good. It sucks sleeping propped up with pillows in one position all night, though. I am supposed to go to the doctor Thursday so hopefully I’ll know for sure then what’s up. Then I ride in the afternoon, haha.

I actually can’t wait to get back on the horses. I am feeling so confident after the show, despite everything!

Oh, and PICTURES!

Pancakes - awesome pics! Your horse is gorgeous! I get how you feel. I usually end up with around 600mg of ibuprofen at least once a day, usually two-three, but doctor has suggested changing it up with aspirin and aspirin/tylenol (ie: Excedrin) in order to protect my stomach. I was worried my lesson wouldn’t go well today since my knees were really achy, but it was a dressage lesson and that tends to be a lot more forgiving then my jump lessons!

Oh, and love your horse’s name!
