Can we have an adult re-rider support group?

Pancakes good thought on the vetwrap. I love that stuff I use it for everything! Did you ride? How did it go?

PH good luck with the ride. Let us know how it goes. All fingers and toes crossed for you!

Dewey good luck with the insurance thing it can be such a PITA. I did increase my insurance at one point on my last horse, just talked to the guy, told him what I had done in training him (see I didn’t always ride made ones) and sent him documentation of my show results. It wasn’t a big deal at all.

Off to the barn to ride. Working tomorrow and it’s supposed to rain on the weekend so I’m going to enjoy the sunshine and warmth with my best buddy.

Good Luck with your ride, PH! Hopefully the injections have done their thing and your horse is feeling tip-top again (and behaving for you!).

Dewey, that insurance stuff is crazy and very subjective, actually. I didn’t know it was such a headache! Hopefully you have a good agent that can help you make some clear decisions.

Hazel, enjoy the weather! It’s lovely here – 80s and sunny. Nothing better than being out with your friend, enjoying the world!

I did ride today. I rode Paisley (despite all the good names, yes, my trainer went with her top choice!) and he was very good. We only did walk/trot/canter because we wanted to take it easy. He gets heavy sometimes, and then fights you a little when you “check” him, but that’s because he just isn’t used to it. We had a lovely ride, though. I’m learning what I can use and can’t use as far as my body since my core is pretty weak. I am still a little nervous about falling since I know it could be really bad if I do, though, but I feel comfortable in the saddle. Now it’s just trying to get my equitation and leg nice in my tall boots!

My doctor said my lungs look clear on the x-rays though, so that’s good. Everyone be safe!

– So sorry to hear about all the injuries, both human and equine, as well as the bolting! Ack.

I’ve only been on one horse that bolted with me, and that was way back in 1999. Thankfully, it was in an indoor ring. It involved me bailing two times. Yeah, I got back on him to school him after the first bolt, and he grabbed the bit and ran. Again. Funny enough, I sometimes wonder if my past hesitation to canter had anything to do with this. Because he was the last horse I rode before I stopped riding entirely the last go round.

– Vetrap is amazing. I bought my first roll in the late 90s at some little tack store and have tried to keep a roll handy at all times – even during the 10 years I wasn’t riding.

– I usually read CoTH during my lunch hour, in front of my computer. That way I can read, eat and be present for my coworkers in case anyone needs me. I’d rather them bug me at my desk than come find me in the break room.

Opus let us know how things go with the potental lease. Don’t be too hard on yourself, it sounds like work has been really stressful for you. When I am overtired or stressed I tend to over-analyze and put a negative slant on everything. See how you feel when you are more rested and have more energy.
You’re right.

Today was my first full day off from work since … March 6. And I already feel much better. I’m scheduled to ride him on Saturday, but the weather’s looking pretty iffy this weekend. But I do feel better. I’m still getting some odd vibes about the whole thing, but we’ll see. Worse case scenario, I don’t get to lease him, but will continue to save to buy a horse … and save up to hit Hunter’s Rest in the fall. (And maybe some nice tube bumpers and step ups for my Jeep.)

PH how did it go??

Hang in there Opus. A day of R and R will do wonders for your energy and outlook. Hope the weather holds out and you get to ride Saturday. We’ll be waiting to hear how it goes of course!

Pancakes - I read the name “Paisley” in your post and about did a double-take. There is a “Paisley” in our barn and I had thought the name was fairly unique :).

PaintedHunter - I’ve been taught the pulley rein (and taken lessons at a barn where that was the method used anytime a horse took off at a pace you didn’t ask for, even if it wasn’t necessarily “out of control.”). I definitely find it useful, but have also been in your position where the horse I was riding would have fallen over if I had used it.

I had some great rides earlier in the week, but then my stomach stopped agreeing with me (teacher here and the cafeteria food today was apparently a bad choice) followed by my knee on the more recently “healed” leg REALLY flaring up meant no saddle time today. Hopefully it will calm down in a day or two. I’m eager to get back to the progress we were making!

Hope everyone enjoys a good riding weekend!

Do the IHSA lesson girls have a coach/trainer? I would go to them first, since SOMEONE must have seen the horse ridden today if it was one of them who rode it. Let them know 1) the horse was not properly cared for and 2) you got to take the fall for it (which is not cool!). Then, when your trainer gets back in town, tell her.

So basically I would’ve done what you did. I hope the horse got taken care of too… :frowning: Poor guy.

Intersting stuff on the insurance- never had to deal with that!

Well…ride tonight was meh. He was distraught form the beginning because his girlfriend had been removed from turnout with him to go ride, and he was a mess calling for her while we tacked up.
When we got to the ring, his girlfriend was turned back out next to the ring (ugh, man!) so he rubbernecked the whole time. Then, all the others got pulled inside for dinner, and he was massively insulted by that. WHERE’S MY DINNER?!

COnsidering all that plus how long it’s been since he was ridden, I think he did OK. He tail-swished and tried to be bucky at first, but that gave way to simply being high-strung and jiggy. I didn’t get off until he had a nice flat walk, put his head down and arched his neck for me, which he did  All considered, a slight improvement, but I’m still wondering how he’s going to be when we ride again, especially since we could only walk/trot for a tiny bit tonight.

laser, tens therapy, chiropractor, tiger balm/ben gay, heat and ice and heck, I’ll built a sweat lodge and burn sage if I need to.

Anywho, I thought my recent experiences might give my horsey friends over here at COTH some giggles and a much needed PSA:

My poor client picked up the phone to something along the lines of “ARGH! #@!#^%$#@!” Thankfully she knows me well. Sigh.
Thanks for the positive attitude! Right now B’s only turnout has been in a taped in yard, with the fence turned on - have forgotten and given myself a couple of buzzes lately! My twinges have been getting only slightly better, but still so nagging I am calling this afternoon to finally face the music…
I had to ride with the teenager jumper lesson. I was pretty anxious about it, I’m old enough to be their mother and they all ride pretty fancy horses and jump pretty high. My horse was a TOTAL superstar. By the end the jumps were about 3 feet and I kept up with the kids.
Excellent!! Congrats, HazelG!

Ouch! Take care of yourself, Pancakes. But great that you can still ride! Horse people do have great fortitude. Heal quickly.

And you’re so right about when things hurt. I find riding even makes me feel better as I can feel my core strengthen. Perhaps a little nagging, but the worst is after having to sit still for quite a while, or being on my feet.

Thanks - great info to have, Dewey.

Been a mixed past 24 hours. “Annoying” sister came up to visit and go to some doctor appointments that she prefers with her doctors up here, vs those in VA where she now lives. She stayed with our older sister. Well, “annoying” sister had a mammogram, (after waiting for 3 years!) and it was not a good one. Further tests show an issue. Our older sister lost her 40 year old daughter to breast cancer a few years back, leaving behind a young daughter. (Older sister, young daughter, and her mother all with the same horse obsession.) As much as my newly diagnosed sister is annoying (a bit preachy religion and politics wise) you certainly never wish this on anyone. Supposedly things look positive - it is early and we’ll see. My job tomorrow is to be around as she’ll be by herself driving back to VA, and we are going to be available for “talk therapy” -driving that long is lonely normally, let alone after having news like this. She does have a great husband, and lovely grown sons and grandchildren.

Then had a lovely lesson this morning. Of course first off, the weather is perfect. Then trainer ID’d that I use my seat too much when applying leg aids, and when that was isolated, things improved. We had a nice walk throughout, so much so that we then actually trotted the last several minutes and B lengthened, carried his head low, really moved well forwardly (he does have an awesome floating trot when not being a dingdong), and no bucks!! Yea! Could be he is really not a winter horse, or that all the work beginning all over on the longe has helped, as has the attention on the ground. Either way, it’s so nice to see a glimpse of the horse I’ve been hoping he can be.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Sooooo sorry to hear about your sister, Peg. Hope it turns out OK. My older sis had breast cancer…twice…had two mastectomies. She is in great health, now, though, several years after the second one.

CVPeg- gosh, i’m sorry :frowning: That’s terrible.

Pancakes, how are you feeling/how did the vet wrap do, if I didn’t miss an update?

Oh, now it says 3/28. My bad! I hope they get here soon. I’m eager to try them out

CV Peg - so sorry about your sister. I hope all goes well for her!

Opus - I know how you feel about the day off - other than weekends. I was supposed to be off the week between Christmas and New Year’s - didn’t happen. Have cancelled a couple before now, this one I took - even though I will pay for it.

However, that’s Monday - an eon away. Got to ride today - first time in a week. Honestly, I shouldn’t have - the tendons in my right ankle look like fat rubber bands, but I did anyway. Some of us are thinking about doing a dressage show in May - at the very basic level. So, we actually left the ring! and used the jump field to practice. It dawned on me - one of us is ring sour, and it isn’t Fin…Something about big open space and visions of running pell mell enter my head. But, we did it. We walked all around - the only distraction was the filly and her mom on the front pasture - what is that little thing??? And then we practiced the test - at the walk for now. But it all went good and Finn was a very good boy for her idiot mother!

For those who asked for pics of the filly - duh - go to iron_horse_equestrian. com. She has her own page!

Hope your ribs are doing OK Pancakes.

CVPeg - sorry to hear about your sister. That is rough. I hope they caught it early.

Thank God I am going to have a lesson tomorrow - I have been miserable being away from the barn due to work.

Hope everyone has good rides this weekend.

Hope you all have good rides this weekend! And Peg, hope your sister will be ok.

Mr. Stall Rest is up to about an hour and half turnout in half the round pen each day, and down to 1cc of ace for that turnout. So far, he has not done anything to re-injure anything. I’m hoping that the next vet visit gets him cleared for tack walking. I suggested to the barn owner/head pro that we put him on full training board for the first month back at work, so the staff could do the daily walk rides at their convenience, when the barn and ring were quiet. The last thing they need is me coming over after work on a busy lesson evening and needing to ride at a walk for 20 minutes. And since I’m the nervous type, my horse doesn’t need me doing the first month of walk rides. They’d have to ace both me and the horse!

Is anyone going to the NYC carriage horse event (ClipClopNYC) this coming weekend? I’m hoping to meet lots of COTHers. It should be fun.

PH sounds like it went okay, all things considered. When do you ride again?

Pancakes how are you feeling?

CV Peg sorry to hear about your sister. Sending good wishes along

Tarheel how did the lesson go?

Jaslyn that sounds great. Good luck with the dressage show!

Pony4me sounds to me like Mr. Stall Rest is behaving and heading in the right direction! I think the full training board is a great idea. I’m all for letting the pros be the pros! Because I’m not!

So for many reasons I am so glad that I found this group. And today I had another “thank goodness for the reriders” kinda moment. So y’know the old saying, “pride goes before a fall”? And do you remember me saying my perfectly made horse doesn’t bolt? I’m sure you see where this is going… So our beautiful weather turned cold and windy quite abruptly. My daughter and I decided to try riding outside anyway. I was all by myself at the top end of the ring and out of nowhere comes a huge flock of flapping shrieking birds, right in front of my horse’s face. He spooked (for maybe the second time in his whole life) and then decided to hightail it down to the other end of the ring where my daughter and her pony were! Took me 3 strides to figure out what was happening, three more to remember…you guessed it…the pulley rein (thank you Dewey). And guess what? Worked like a charm, stopped not even halfway down the ring. And if we hadn’t just had this discussion I’m sure it wouldn 't have even been on my radar screen. So once again fellow reriders, thanks for saving me, and thanks all for being there!

I’ll be in NYC for the event this weekend- looking forward to meeting some COTH people in real life!

HazelG - glad the pulley rein popped in your head and worked out for you. I always wonder if I’ll have the presence of mind to use it when needed.

Lesson today was really good. After being so busy at work, it was very nice to just chill at the barn. I had a lesson on my trainer’s faithful schoolie. We took it easy - did a decent amount of sitting trot practice, which is much easier for me on the schoolie than on my horse. Gave my guy a good grooming. He is having his teeth floated on Thursday, and he is having a break until then. I don’t want him to be uncomfortable with a bit in his mouth when it is no big deal for him to have a mini-vacation.

Anyway, being around my horse and riding definitely soothes my stressed out soul. The bond we feel with these creatures is such an amazing gift.

So having a crappy weekend except that I have decided to bring the “baby” home after April. Yah, I gave my notice after I was informed that board rates were to go up for all horses not in training with barn owner soooooo, decided that barn owner’s attitude and prices changed everything. Yah! my trainer will come to my local barn, sometimes, and both the “baby” and old guy will be together. Currently the “baby” is 28 miles away-one way- and with the cost of gas, daylight savings, increase in board costs and negative barn owner, baby comes home and is my pet again.

I was so hesitant about this but 11 months full training with a great trainer, and the ocassional lesson with same trainer and a wonderfull dressage trainer, I might just be OK. I need something positive in my life and I am excited that I will have the baby with me…yikes, what have I done…

Sorry been awol here for a bit… Things been weird here… Hope I remember everything I read to catch up…

Pancackes ouch broken ribs not fun… heal soon… Never had them but heard not fun to have. black buttocks… bet makes work intresting.

It amazes me how many younger riders are not taught he pully rein. it was one of the first things taugh to me back in the day.

OTTB glad to hear your lessons went well. Dont worry about being shy about trail riding. I had a bad fall back in mmm 80, when I broke my left ankle. And really havent been back on one since I think because i did not have anyone to encourage me one way or the other. The only good thing to come from that particular fall was the eye candy who took me to hospital in back of ambulance…

Well I thought I had found someone to ride Toby while i am trying to mend but after first ride i havent heard from her. So I supposed she has decided not to. I wish she had let me know instead of just letting me hang out to dry.

Cvpeg I hope your sister is doing well.

Opus how did the lease go? Did you or didnt you?

I may go awol again. several things have come up that were really unexpected. like slap in face that the only way we found out is through comedy of errors type thing… It seems that the house we thought we were buying … Sending in our payments on time every month for the last year and half to the seller is being sold out from under us due to non payment of property taxes…Which were included in our payment according to contract. So who knows what is going to happen to the roof over head in the next who knows how long. sale is the 4th…
Im about ready to loose my health insurance on april 1st due to dh earning to much $$ for me to stay on it. Cant afford regular insurance and cant afford the state ‘’‘high risk pool’’… wouldnt matter anyway as is doesnt cover most of my illnesses any way and it doesnt cover any of my meds except my hormones…
BM is insisting that I alter my normal shot schedule to meet hers OR use her vet ( which I wouldnt trust a dead gold fish with) to meet her schedule and to to Toby’s teeth. his caps are ‘‘ready to come off’’ according to said vet. Which tells me he handeld my horse with out my permission. Which really ticks me off Tg I have yet to get bill from said vet as i did not auhorize said handeling of horse I will not pay any bill from this vet. and BM is aware of this. I keep getting text messages from her saying please get vet out ot do shots and teeth. I say I do my own and will get them done by X date. she texts saying well DR Z can do teeth ANd shots for Z$ only about 5x’s more than I can do my own shots for and have an equine dentist to come and do teeth for. it is really starting to drive me bat chit…
WOuld love to move Toby but like the place it is small with an indoor hot and cold water ( both are as scarce as hens teeth in my area) and is full care also almost unheard of in my area… and the board fee is 250$ cant bea that with a stick concidering places with less are running a lot more … and with other stuff going on in my life right now…
So if you dont see me for a while that is why… Or I have be banging head on wall somewhere and I have a headach and am trying to figure out if I can take asprin or not or if it will interfear with what is left of my scripted med…
Sorry didnt mean to be a downer…

Crap, Bumknees! If I could wish better times for anyone, it would be you today.

On the house situation, could you contact the taxing authority that’s selling your house, find out how much is owed, pay them and stay in the house? As an aside (20/20 hindsight), I have heard of this happening before, and have heard that any renter or lease purchaser should check the city or county unpaid tax reports to be sure their residence is not on that list. I own a coupld of rental properties, and the tax bills go to my home address. The renters never know if I pay or not. I doubt if they check, but they should. At the very least, the owner of the residence, to whom you’ve been paying a monthly amount that was for taxes, owes you that money back. Maybe some lawyer time is needed here.
