There are many cases of wildlife (especially raptor) deaths from feeding on chemically euthanized animals that are disposed of in landfills. That has lead (for the landfills that accept them) to having a specified day that they will accept carcasses, which are immediately buried.

Not that I “get” but I get how a trainer can talk a vet into selling them a bottle of something that could be misused. How on earth are vets getting talked into selling trainers a euthanasia drug? Are they getting it completely under the table through human drug distribution channels? I guess a blessing to be totally ignorant to this but the idea of flirting with the edge of death for a blue ribbon is wild.

Unfortunately there are some dirty vets out there, just like every other group of professionals.

Wasn’t pentobarbital one of the drugs used to execute people in the U.S.? The European makers of the drug (whatever it was) stopped supplying it to the U.S. because it was being used to kill people.
Nothing, however, will stop the U.S. from executing people and the absence of the drug postponed some executions until they could figure out some other chemical means of killing. The inability to source the drug is thought to have resulted in several “botched” executions.

Well, two scenarios come to mind - one is a request to put down a farm animal when necessary or something, but misuse is intended by the recipient (not necessarily known by the vet). I know some bigger operations that keep controlled substances on hand in case of emergency. Substances that a vet wouldn’t just give to anyone but they trust the big operation owner because they know them well/go there more often.

Other option - I don’t know the particulars but where I rode in HS (mmfrmffr years ago), the owner had race horses (low end) and he “gave them vitamins” that he “got from Canada”…

same way human doctors are running pill mills and selling oxy, hydrocodone, fentanyl etc. There are always people out there who will do anything for a buck.

I want to emphasize that this is illegal. Controlled substances are regulated by the DEA and each state board of vet med. We have to keep them behind two locks, and maintain a log of use. Bulk dispensing controlled substances in the way you’ve described has absolutely no legal basis.
