Can you just mix ulcerguard paste in their feed? or is direct tubing in mouth best?

I’m going to start my mare on ulcer guard.
After an initial week of ranitidine has shown some improvement in her behavior.
She has always been a good eater ( her ulcer signs were more issues with riding and saddling up related) so I’m thinking she would eat it in her feed.
Does mixing it with her feed make it less effective?
I can dose her with the tube but I’m worried she will get wise to me coming to get her each morning and not want to come to me. and right now she is very good about coming up to me. I’ve thought about the Abler pop rocks. But I’m not sure I want to wait that long before starting her on treatment.

I had the same concern & contacted Merial with this question about a year ago. Their answer was that the FDA trials were done using the dosing method, so it’s not proven to be absorbed/effective if fed in the feed. For all the $$$ I was spending, I decided just to dose it. As it turns out, the Ulcergard tastes good to most horses and they become easier to dose as time goes on.

As an aside, I’ve used pop rocks in the past with ok results but my most recent order was ineffective. I had to go with Ulcergard instead. I’ll never get them again.

My horse perks his ears up and comes to the front of the stall when he hears me rip the plastic off the Gastroguard - seems to think its delicious.

Thanks for the reply… Sounds like I just need to bite the bullet and dose her.
And thanks for the input on the pop rocks. I know that many people love them but the fact they come from out of country makes me wary.
She doesn’t seem to have them that bad. And I feel like I am doing everything else right feed and turnout wise. So I’m hoping a course of ulcerguard and then follow up with a supplement will help keep her happy and ulcer free.

What works for my horse is to dose him and immediately shove some carrot chunks or horse cookies into his mouth.

Use them or don’t, but FWIW, this from a 2011 USA Today article:

"More than three out of four voters are confident that prescription drugs made in the USA are free from contamination, while fewer than one in 10 feel confident about medications made in India or China, according to a poll released today by the Pew Charitable Trust’s Prescription Project.

Yet, unbeknownst to many Americans, an estimated 80% of the substances used to make or package drugs sold here are made in other countries, says Allan Coukell, a pharmacist who directs the medical safety portfolio for the Pew Health Group. And a growing proportion come from India or China. In 2007, 68% of ingredients of drugs sold worldwide came from India or China, vs. 49% in 2004."

I have never had any adverse reaction to dosing with the tube from any of my TBs…actually 1st mare would stay down if she was all comfy (yes comfy, bright eyed, happy eared, just reaalllly early in the morning so she was still snuggled down) in her shavings when I went in to give it to her, next gelding I never even had to put a halter on him, one mare I had to put a halter on to do it…but I think that was more because she had just spent a week in the horsepital being poked and prodded, she didn’t really put up much of a fuss just smartly understandably took any opportunity to walk away from people with suspicious aka non edible objects in their hands. No one ever spit it out…it may be inconvenient but get your money’s worth out of it by administering about and hour before breakfast as recommended.

They really don’t mind it. Even day after day. I’ve even walked up to my horse in his paddock, no halter, and given him a tube. Just try to give it when they don’t have food in their mouth (best time for me is post-ride), because then you’ll get a wad of chewed up grass/hay/whatever and ulcergard spat on the ground.

(Like other posters, I’ve also found the Merial products to be very well tolerated :))

Everyone knows that drugs sold in the USA are made in the USA by white men in lab coats.

I’ve plopped (it’s not enough liquid to be “squirted” IMO…) it directly on top of his feed, although my horse is a sneaky $#%^ who thinks I’m poisoning him and won’t eat it… so sometimes I have to literally mush it around to make sure it gets coated on the grain. Never had any issues.
