Canadian Eventers - Our Eventing Levels Have New Names

EC has announced new names for our eventing levels in Canada.

They will be as follows:

EV120 - Advanced
EV115 - Intermediate
EV 110 - Prelim
EV105 - Modified
EV100 - Training
EV90 - Pre Training/Novice
EV85 - Entry/Beginner Novice
EV78 - Pre Entry
EV70 - Starter

I believe they want to follow Europe and UK levels.

Maybe this will help stop people upgrading for bragging rights because no one will know what the h you are talking about when you say “I did EV100” this weekend haha

I am out of the loop. What does ‘Modified’ between Training and Prelim entail?

Modified is 3’ 5"
For complete specs see the Eventing rules, appendix 1.4, and Appendix 2

is there a specific announcement somewhere or is it just wade thru the rule changes for the year to find it?

No not announced yet by EC but Eventing Alberta posted it on their FB page.

Blech. Double blech.

Yes, the number refers to the fence height, like in Jumpers.

It’s definitely in the rule changes for 2023 - I found it months ago when the proposed rule changes were posted  Although they hadn’t been approved at that time.

BE changed names to numbers for the lower levels many years ago. It is very clear and unambiguous: in BE 90 the xc fences will not exceed 90cm. Much easier than pre-novice or intro or … no name for 70cm.

As a non-eventer, I like it. Now when an Eventing client tells me what level they are competing at, I don’t have to look up what height that equates to. The names also seem like the take the judgement of the level out of it…which seems to be a thing.

It definitely make sense to an outsider of eventing (sorry cant think of a better word)

But us eventers are old school and nostalgic…hard to let go of our old ways!

Lol, I still struggle with having heights in centimeters instead of feet/inches!

I feel the low level names changed not that long ago though didn’t they?

same here, have always been feet! Not here in Canada, we just added a new level Pre Entry a few years back.

As a PE rider- Thank you for including me Eventerland :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thank you @Janet ,

Is this the same as Modified in the States? I think that has become pretty popular, and a great stepping stone to Prelim (so I understand.)

Yes!

I just noticed this but the new Starter division is EV60, not EV70. Even more inviting for green horses or riders
