Canadian H/J Riders: short vs long stirrup division?

Having a stupid night and can’t figure it out - what is the difference between the short stirrup and long stirrup hunter divisions? They both appear to be the same height? Is one for juniors and one seniors or something?

Trying to figure out the lowest division that an adult ammy can start off in…

Short stirrup is restricted to riders 12 and under, while long stirrup is for riders over that age.

Perfect, thanks!

Here is another thread about the Long Stirrup division.

Not sure if it will completely apply to you though, Ceylon.

If you were in Ontario, I would say that there are some series that offer an Adult 2’ division…and then you could bump over to Trillium in the 2’6" when you were ready. (And wanted to compete at that level)

I -should- qualify since pony has never shown O/F and I haven’t shown O/F for nearly a decade (and only up to 2’6, and only 1 show at that height), based on the quote in that thread.

The VIHJA appears to start at short/long stirrup, not counting the pony classes. While I have a large pony, I’m ineligible for pony classes anyway so no point in going through the trouble of carding him.

For shows that are eligible for BCHJA points, short stirrup is for juniors and long stirrup for amateurs. Not sure if VIHJA would be the same or not. Some shows in the lower mainland combine the two into a single division.

You can also show in any division marked “Schooling” or “Training” at those heights as they are unrated and an excellent way to get miles without worrying about eligibility. Not sure how BC shows work but here in AB we generally have tons of Schooling and Training divisions before the SS/LS (2’3) and Pre-Child/Adult (2’6) divisions start.

Edit. You should also be able to show in any “Low” rounds.

Additionally, EC regulations state

ARTICLE G201 GENERAL

  1. Entries in hunter classes shall be over 14.2 hands except:
    a) in pony hunter divisions restricted to juniors
    b) in Adult Amateur classes where fences do not exceed 3’ (0.90 m),
Adult Amateurs may ride large ponies.
    See also: Articles G306.2, G307, and G309.4 regarding cross-entry
    restrictions for ponies.

  2. Adults are permitted to show (be judged) on large ponies in
miscellaneous non-point classes not limited to juniors. A pony shown in
judged classes by an adult may not be shown in judged classes by a
    junior at the same competition.

So you should be ok to show up to 3’ in any Adult Am rounds (which would include Pre-Adult (2’6) etc. As long as the pony is a large. The pony is a large, right? If not, all bets are off!
