I’m sure he’s dead, but he was the sire of John Williams’s event horse Carrick. He was a Canadian Sport horse. I was just wondering if his lines are still alive in Canadian breeding. (There’s a Cozy’s Commander son on the market as a foxhunter. Horse is 12).

His bloodlines are still very much alive. His breeder stands son of Cozy’s Commander called Cozymyn.

That’s great. Cozymyn is certainly one to add to the list of North American eventing stallions, since he is the sire of Cold Harbour.

He was also the sire of Gretchen Butts’ four star horse (whose name is escaping me at this moment, need more coffee).
As a humorous aside, I remember John Williams telling me once that after he went around Rolex on Black Points Tilly Go Bragh, his phone rang off the hook with people wanting to give him ponies to go around Rolex on, but of course none of them were Tilly, and that similarly after Carrick went to WEG his phone rang off the hook with people with draft crosses for him, but again, none of them were Carrick. He had to gently point out that he hadn’t gone out to be “the guy on the pony” or “the guy on the draft cross” but that he had lucked upon two incredibly talented individuals who just happened to be a pony and a draft cross.
Either way, I think the guy that breeds those guys is sharp as a tack, and a great eye for a nick. A great resource for genetics and knowledge.

Do you know the name of his breeder? I have a mare that has Cozy Commander as her grandsire on her dam’s side. I got her from a farm in southern Ontario.

The breeder of Cozy’s Commander and Cozymyn is Doug Dean.

That is who I purchased our mare from.
Doug had sold her mother in foal to someone in the States. Somehow he ended up with the foal ( at around 7 years of age) and used her as a brood mare for a few years before selling her to us.
She did have one live foal that went on to finish in 2nd place ( I think) at the RAWF in the Gov Cup.

A little late to this conversation but Commander has been dead for awhile. Doug Dean stands his son Cozymyn aka Elvis who has done a little bit in the open jumper world I believe.
There are several Elvis children floating around the event world, most noteably Sweepea Dean, a nice training level horse called Rebus (by Elvis out of War Chant - Carrick’s mom), a nice young gelding called Finnegan that John Williams has shown a bit at Novice, and our own Cold Harbor, who just won the Open Intermediate division at Southern Pines II, with Boyd Martin in the irons. I understand Gretchen’s daughter has a full brother to Cold Harbor, but I haven’t seen him yet.
While the first generation commander sons such as Carrick and Zydeco (Gretchen’s horse) were perhaps a bit more precosious, the second generation kids are taking a bit longer to develop and mature.

I am collecting stories and the breeding bloodlines of Doug Dean from Durham Wood Farm, from Ontario Canada.
Many of those who knew and loved Doug were shocked by his sudden passing in March of 2020.
Many in the horse world do not know he is gone. I am a writer, and a long-time family friend. I am collecting stories for, and about, Doug and his horses. You can’t talk about Doug, without talking about his horses. I was a part of Doug’s life when Cozy’s Commander arrived on the farm. I can tell you how sure he was of that young horse. I was there.
Sharing stories about Doug and the horses he knew and loved has become a passion project for me. Getting to know others who knew and worked with Doug has been another gift from a unique and powerful horseman.
