So Tack of the Day has some on sale till Dec 6th. I’ve always loved canary. so the question is: are they only for navy coats or can they go with black coats? They look so nice with the navy, but alas, I only have the black attire. do they even look OK with black? needless to say, my fashion sense is well, um, lacking! I don’t think wranglers count as “haute couture” or what ever that is…
Well, I’ve never owned a navy coat, only black for riding in field- and my canary breeches have always gone just fine with black. So go for it. Not that I am a fashion plate, mind you, but hey, Wadsworth gave the okay…
ChefJade just wore them in a hunter classic in Vegas and looked divine. High time they made a Big Comeback.
Yes, you can wear canary breeches with navy or black coats. And canary looks great with either one, as well. So go for it!
I am ancient; when I started hunting in 1967 with Fairfax, I would guess that 3 out of 4 people in black melton, ladies and gents, wore canary breeches, the rest being about evenly divided between tan and brick. I think fashion is partly determined by availability; suddenly in the '70s, along with horrible stretch breeches, you suddenly saw a lot less canary available in the shops. And, btw, I mourn the disappearance of pegged britches except at an arm and a leg at Horse Country.
The Hunting Stock Market still makes the proper britches - and I think they’re less expensive than Horse Country.

I haven’t ordered from them so can’t vouch for the sizing or anything. But I’ve seen and handled the britches at the VA Hound Show and they are VERY nice quality. Well worth checking into.
I hoard canary britches.
eta - the made to measure section of their site doesn’t appear to have the same selections as I remember. They still have Bedford Cord - but I could have sworn they had canary… my mind is slipping.
Well, I bought my last slightly pegged pair of canary breeches at the Old Habit, alas.
But if one searches the FOL archives, there are a number of folks that get some decent twill and wool pegged breeches from some place in the SW, maybe Arizona or N. Mexico. I haven’t looked at that web site for at least several years so can’t recall it offhand, but good stuff!
What Price Glory has wool/elastique pegged cavalry britches. (WWII style) Also cotton for summer riding. A bit too much flair for my taste but a friend has a pair and they don’t seem to be as flared when worn. Tough as nails, those things.
Another interesting topic - from my point of view anyway donw here in NZ:lol: Last hunt season I saw my first EVER tan breeches when the huntsman from Sedgefield came to hunt with us. I was taken aback, to say the least!, when he appeared in black jacket with TAN breeches! Nobody at all questioned it or minded in the least, but it was such a surprise to see. I guessed it must be fine to wear them in the States or else he never would have worn them here - he and his wife were really lovely people and an absolute joy to have here. Canary is acceptable here - heck, we even have the odd person who comes out in black breeches - but it’s not common. Pale coloured breeches are the norm over here - but not white, that’s reserved for Master and huntsman only. Except that females are welcome to wear white. Hhmmm, it’s starting to sound quite complicated here …
Thanks all for the input. Well, I went back to the website and pondered, and pondered and pondered some more. I finally decided that perhaps those breeches were a tad to bright (hard to tell in a photo on line) and even more important, I slapped the side of my head and said “what the He*l were you thinking…you have a hard enough time keeping tan breeches clean!” Those would have horse snot and black and brown marks all over them…and that would be before the stirrup cup!!!
So I got the military green for schooling. Just couldn’t pass them up.

Interesting. What color exactly is a pale colored breech?
Here in the US, tan/beige is the standard color for hunt breeches unless one is staff wearing scarlet. In which case white is correct.
This conversation makes more sense if you know that the word “tan” means something different in the US and English speaking countries
Eg: USA http://efstyle.com/catalog/contemporary-leather-sectional-savannah-hardwood-frame-p-2180.html
Eg: UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seattle-Seater-Vintage-Leather-Sofa/dp/B000JBXKSY
(Both just random google images results)
tangledweb,
Did you mean for your link to bring up sofas?
Yes. That’s why I noted they were random google images results. One is what an American site calls a tan sofa. The other is what a UK site calls a tan sofa.
I probably could have found colored squares and said “This is what I think an American means when they say tan” and “This is what other people mean when they say tan” but I figured it was easier to search for on a product and more believable than just me claiming it to be true.
I guess if I was less lazy i could have googled for breeches.
American “Tan” breeches.

English “Tan” breeches.

Australian “Tan” breeches that as a bonus look hilarious.

Bonus points for adding humor to my day!!
Well this is all starting to make more sense now! The “tan” breeches the Sedgefield huntsman wore were definitely the “english” version of tan - similar to the colour on tan-topped hunting boots. Will find a photo. Your “american” tan is what we wear here too - fawn, beige etc … “pale coloured”. You learn something new every day! =)

Almost rust, or maybe taupe. Not tan by our definition.
Ain’t language grand?
I’d call them rust so I could avoid the language barrier
