Has anyone noticed a difference using pills versus liquid?
I’m using liquid (Leventa) now b/c that’s all my small vet prescribes, but since bloodwork is stable, I’d really like to switch to tabs for ease of use and $$$…
I use palatec (sp?) chewable tablets for our girl, and she does great on them. They come in most of the doses that the soloxine pills do, but in a tasty flavor tab. She loves them! I had a hard
time stablizing her on the pills because she would hide them, and have found it a ton easier, and she doesn’t run at medication time. Would highly reccommend them.
I’ve never used liquid, only pills. I’ve had at least 3 dogs who were on soloxine.
The piggy types swallowed it just plain tossed into their kibble.
The recently deceased greyhound would eat it if I poured warm water over his kibble & the pill disolved into the “gravy.”
(And of course he was just put down after I bought 200 pills! It’s ok, I have another old dog who’ll probably be prescribed the soloxine sooner or later.)
FYI, the pills are actually the same as the ones used for humans, levothyroxine sodium. Which in smaller sizes is on the $4 list for Walmart/ Target etc…
If your dog is on a dose higher that 0.2mg(200mcg) then they can still be ordered in either a pill or a chewable from most canine online pharmacys. I’m not sure I even knew it was available in a liquid…

My equine vet wasn’t aware it was sold in liquid either. She asked me about it and was like, “You pay what? For what? Holy hell, just tell me what you need.” :lol: This being my first experience with thyroid issues in a dog, I didn’t know I could get tabs.
For application’s sake, I don’t recommend the liquid. Syringing it down the hatch is easy enough; it’s just unpleasant… sort of like giving cough syrup to a small child except that the dog can’t spit. She does try. She makes that same squinty-eyed, gritted-teeth, tongue-out, gagging “ewwww!” face that kids make. And the whole idea of putting it on food is a joke. This is a dog that inhales edibles (and occasionally inedibles) with almost zero discretion, but she’d rather go on a hunger strike than willingly consume anything tainted with the liquid med.
