Pardon me if this has been discussed before, but has anyone else come across this?
I went to the store to buy MSM a couple days ago and they asked for my ID and said they’d need to write it down because it is now being treated like Sudafed because people use it to make meth.
WTF???
Is this true?
I didn’t know and it felt like a weird invasion of privacy so I said nevermind, but I haven’t tried to buy it online yet.
A few years ago when I worked at a mom/pop tack store in the South there was a brief time we couldn’t sell MSM – for that reason. I was not aware it was still a problem.
Also, your icon is adorably hilarious. What kind of bird?
Many years ago we quit being able to buy the big iodine tubs we used to mix in with our winter wheat pasture minerals.
Iodine supplementation at 4% kept cattle from getting foot rot and lumpy jaw.
Regular commercial minerals by law could not have more than 2%.
We added iodine to reach our needed 4%, as per our vet’s recommendations.
We mixed it in a small electric concrete mixer.
Then one day we could not buy any more iodine in bulk.
Same reason given, drug users were buying it for their concotions.
After that we had several outbreaks and had to treat each cattle individually.
At least the OP can buy what she needs, even if it has become a hassle.
Yup, totally normal here. They ask for your ID and the description and plates of the vehicle it will be transported in. And perhaps your destination? I don’t recall, it’s been several years.
Well, she’s not my raven anymore, but she’s a raven who was born in my arena rafters in the spring and got kicked out of the nest before she was ready to fledge. So I hand-raised her for a couple months until she had to make a decision to stay with me or go with her family as the other fledged babies were flying around and being trained by mom and dad where to go for food.
Ultimately she made the right choice and went with her siblings. She would not have been a fun pet.
I did get great joy from the experience, and lots of fun pictures and video of her being her.
I call Poe a her because when I’d look at her up close, she had the prettiest eyes that looked like girl eyes.
Those “things” if you are searching in your state, location, to look for would be generally referred to as meth “precursors”.
Local meth labs used to be the “in” thing many years ago. They then tapered off as meth was more easily manufactured in bulk in Mexico (precursor restrictions cut down on local labs). I am getting the impression that local labs may be starting up again (but that would be anecdotal more than any statistical information from any law enforcement agency).
On a quick Google search I found an old paper that mentioned that MSM (methylsufonylmethane) is often used to dilute the purity of crystal meth prior to distribution and sales.
Based on an anecdotal lack of articles linking MSM with meth as a precursor, that MSM may not be considered a meth precursor in many jurisdictions. YMMV. My comments are strictly personal and anecdotal, not based in any documented facts
My regular feed store just collected my address and contact info the first time I purchased any feed-type item (it wasn’t even MSM or iodine, it was straight up Purina grain) saying it was a requirement. I’m in their computer now and they never ask me for that info no matter what I buy.
The tack store chain I buy my supplements at (because it’s cheaper) has my name and phone number, but I don’t remember ever having to give an address, though I might have at one point. I’m in Canada, so our regulations are different, but its interesting to know that is a use for MSM, I never would have thought.
My sister works for a company that was hired to figure out why drain cleaner sales are through the roof in central and western Canada. . . their conclusion was meth. So any western Canada peeps that can chime in as to if there are similar regulations on MSM there?
It’s easily purchased in tack stores and farm stores here (MD, DE, PA area). I buy it every month, no one’s ever asked to see any ID etc. Of course we are in the heroin capital so maybe that supersedes the meth worry.
In Oregon, it’s any amount 2lbs or larger, and that includes buying two- 1lb containers. We have to collect your ODL, license plate # off of your registration, and what the use is. Every time. The local police come in periodically and collect the paperwork. If it’s a rice bran based pellet, of course we don’t need to do that then.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen customers come in that don’t “look” like horse people, try to buy the MSM, and as soon as you ask for the info, they leave it on the counter. It is used to cut meth.
Yeah, we’ve been doing that in WA for years, and they’ve really buckled down the last couple of years. I generally order mine online, but sometimes miscalculate. And every time I go to the feed store it is a hassle. Not the paperwork - finding someone who knows what the heck paperwork to do.
