Can't watch videos? Your modem may be "tired".

Hi All,

Just an FYI - I’ve been finding it more and more difficuly to watch NBC and BBC coverage of the horse events. I know many people have also complained about their ability to watch videos as well. Sleuthing and much time on the phone with my DSL company has uncovered the fact that my modem is on it’s way out, which is affecting the video watchability but not so much my ability to visit text-based websites. So I haven’t been noticing the problems with my modem until I started watching the videos. They’re sending me a new modem.

This is just an FYI to those having difficulties with Expatshield and/or NBC. It may not be the website - it may be your modem. Looks like I’ll be going into work this weekend NOT to do work but to watch the replays! :o:yes:

Unless it’s super old, that might just be a line. Companies will throttle you back when your usage (and that of people in your area) gets high. They will slow down your download speed so that you are not using as much bandwidth. It’s how they manage their limited bandwidth.

ESPECIALLY with DSL.

Yep–throttling is happening here with our DSL. We’ve got a monitor that keeps track of Kbps while we’re online, and it’s very easy to see the variations in speed. Frustrating!

Well they tested the signal going to my outside box, and then performed a test on my modem. Even they (AT&T) guarantee a certain minimum Mbps, which my computer wasn’t getting. That’s how they figured out it was the modem. They’re shipping me a new free one. My modem is about 3 years old, I’m not surprised that it’s “going”. The real test will be when I get the new modem… Anyway, I noticed delays on text websites and didn’t think too much of it. but the problem became most evident when attempting to stream these videos.
