CANTER Cutie That Has Foxhunted

[QUOTE=Sempiternal;8088538]
Well his ad isn’t up on CANTER IL quite yet, but they have his video up!

According to CANTER IL’s post on FB, “has fox hunted, been trail ridden and can be ridden on backside in a leadshank.” Sounds like a nice guy for $1,500 (he’s 16.1 and age wasn’t listed, but will probably be in the ad when it goes up).

Not relevant to me, but how would a horse with this background fit into the requirements for the RRP? IIRC, the requirement is a max of 15 rides after racing, but he has obviously had extensive retraining while still racing. If a horse like this was entered it would give that rider a huge head start over the horse that have had very little training outside of racing.

I think it may mean 15 rides by the NEW owner… as I know personally of a few horses in the RRP that were owned or trained on the track by owners/trainers who understood the importance of also giving them riding training as well.

You’d be surprised, not all horses come off the track with only race training. One of mine came to me green-broke by track standards but had plenty of trail experience as a four year old. His trainer was certified bonkers in a bemusing way, and said he used to hack him at home during the winter. Another was barred from racing after a gate issue, but was hacked around by the trainer’s daughter. Most track horses wear more hats than we give them credit for :slight_smile:

I realize this and I have seen several ads on the FL board and CANTER talking about horses with non-race training. It was just a curiosity question about how it might affect their eligibility for the RRP.

Actually, IF (big IF - as in it’s not happening :slight_smile: ) I were shopping for a horse for the RRP I would actively look for a horse with this type of background.
