Canter horse in MD- Doctor Anesthesia

So what does everyone think of this one?

I am looking for a horse to do LL eventing. BN, maybe N. Some longer trail rides like 8-11 miles, maybe some farmer’s pack foxhunting so not much jumping. I am 5’3" with short legs so he is actually on the bigger side of what I am looking for. The horse would be for my personal use not a resale. I do board but I don’t mind a few months down time, some body work and some ulcer treatment. The BO at the farm I board with has worked extensively with TBs prepping them for the track.
I have never worked with an OTTB straight from the track but I work with a good dressage and jump trainers. Both think I can deal with one. Another friend works with a local OTTB rescue and she seems to feel confident I would be fine with an OTTB. I have an arab cross that is quite on the hot side so am no stranger to forward.

I am in SE PA so if anybody had suggestions from the Canterusa.org affiliates in PA, DE, MD or maybe WV they want to suggest I am open to that.

My basic criteria is small, sound, sane. No cribbing (since I board) no weaving. My purchase budget is low, aroung $1,500, since I know I will need a saddle. My current horse’s saddle is very customized and has pretty much no chance of being able to use it on anything else. I also want to preserve funds for massage, chiro, ulcer treatment and insurance.

I would be open to the right mare as long as she isn’t too much of a 'ho and not too mareish. I don’t want to do the Regumate thing. I have been asked more than once if my gelding is a mare including by a dressage judge at an event- he does the squeal and strike thing, can be a bit goosey to leg especially in the winter, he is a bit anxious and looks to me and very much is prefers me to other people. He takes a bit of time to warm up to strangers. Just a few traits many people associate with mares. I have not ridden enough mares to have a personal opinion.

I think he is really cute and nicely balanced! He looks sturdy. In the itty bitty bit of trot video, he looks like he has some natural suspension. The relationship of his shoulder to his wither to his heart girth as well as the curve of his back make me think he could be a bit challenging to fit in a jump saddle - dressage saddle shouldn’t be as much of a problem though.

Not a pedigree guru so I won’t make any comment there.

I certainly wouldn’t cross him off the list based on anything I see in the pictures.

I really like him, he’s got the kind of build that I love. He looks a little parrot mouthed, so ask about dental problems. But other than that, I like what I see!

ETA: I love his expression, too. He looks like a sweetie!

Nobody else likes or dislikes him?
Oops- nevermind. It looks like his ad is gone.

yes, when I clicked I couldn’t find the ad. best of luck in your horse hunt!

you are in PA, ja?

This horse on CA PA caught my eye the other day – and so did a Candy Ride gelding, but I can’t find his listing anymore. He was also chestnut:

Sale Notes (ETA: Now I’m seeing that Sale Notes is actually an Illinois horse? Sorry. I don’t know why it’s showing up on CA-PA for me…)

She’s bigger than you want though… She’s over at the knee, and it looks bad, but she has an incredible pedigree for sport - especially damside… and she can really move… I bet with some time off and some chiro/farrier attention she’s going to be really nice. The over-at-the-knee does not bother me but would bother someone if for resale… to me it looks human manufactured, look at the line from her shoulder to knee to pastern, lots of remodeling there, and some very long toes. Nice, nice horse. That’s the type of horse I would buy sight-unseen against everyone’s better judgment, because she has a pedigree that is very solid for sport and soundness, and I think that her race record, all things considered, shows a pretty consistent runner. She has 40 starts, a fairly consistent page, a kind expression and I like how her legs look despite having more than average amounts of starts. I want to know what the bald spot is on her shoulder/chest. Blanket rub? Something else?

PA has a couple of nice listings this year…

Some PA horses that caught my eye from pictures alone - no comment on sound/unsound beyond just get a basic PPE.
http://canterusa.org/horses/listings/rapido-includo/ - I like his eye, very kind looking. Nice looking horse too.
http://canterusa.org/horses/listings/one-trick-nomad/ - nice litte mover. I typically do not like the Street Cry horses, but she’s a much nicer mover and type than those I’ve seen.
http://canterusa.org/horses/listings/sister-janice/ - this girl just screams sporty to me

Did you see Jessica Redman’s recent posts on FB? She has some horses from a breeder listed that are in your budget. They are very green to unbroke (although one I think was race trained but unraced).

This one has a nice canter and good type - very nice pedigree for jumping: http://canterusa.org/horses/listings/sunshine-ken/

Something to consider, particularly this time of year - a lot of these prices are very negotiable. So don’t write off one that is a little out of your budget.

I’ve had good luck being very direct. “Look, I like this horse - I’m willing to buy and pick him up now, cash, but this is what I have: $XXX.”

Worst they can say is no, and when it’s a serious buyer with cash right then and there, often times many don’t say no.

I posted about Sister Janice in another thread. I just… there’s no money. The truck needs 3K of oil pan. If I had the money, I’d have bought her already. Love her.

sonny’s mom- if you would buy a mare there was such a cute one that I saw at a local breeder’s farm. She was a nice size, sound, good brain, sound and seemed they said she is just so quiet to ride. They were asking $2500. They are in Quantico, Md and I can put you in touch if you have any interest.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am traveling on business and will look at all them a little more detail once I am not trying to do it on my smartphone

I will try to dig that one up.

I did find that FB listing. I think I am going to pass on them. I need something that is either race broke or green broke. I don’t have the time or skill set to break an unbroke one. I don’t have the funds to send them somewhere for 60 days to have somebody else do it. Some of them are cute. I hope they find a soft landing.

How do you feel about roaring? PM me if it’s not a dealbreaker.

I’m keeping my eyes peeled for you now that I know you’re looking.

Actually there’s a little chestnut QH in Yardley that sounds interesting that’s been for sale for a while too…

@SonnysMom - Dr. Anesthesia may still be available! Apparently ALL of the CANTER sites with horse listings are down. The site is totally broken. :frowning:

Honestly…given your goals and experience, I would not be looking for straight off the track. I’d spend a little more and go for something that you can try and ride. Have you talked to Nina at TRRAC (based at Maui Meadows Farm)? They are in the area and rehome TBs out of their program. You might spend a bit more (but not a huge amount) but you would get a horse with a known history and one you could try. They have a few very cute ones that look very suited for your purpose.

Yeah, I like this one:

She might be negotiable since the small ones can be a harder sell. Plus as I said earlier, you can borrow my Wintec (if it fits).

I have a couple extra saddles hanging around. If you buy a horse and any of them fit, you can either buy them for what I paid or just borrow them as long as you need.
