Please tell me about it. I think it would be a very interesting way to get my feet wet for hilltopping/hunting.
Is it different than the Whoopie Wagon?
Do we need flasks?
For this time of the year, when hounds, horses and people have been hard at it since the fall, car following is a great way to see the action. Our car followers are folks who used to Hunt, know the hounds, the fox and the goings on of many Hunts. So, yes, following by car and seeing where they go and watching what you can of staff and the field, youâll learn the basics.
Take something for the tailgate, compliment the hounds extensively and listen.
Road Staff vs Car Following
Welcome to the wonderful world of hunting! Some hunts now have staff that are âmountedâ in cars. This is a bit different from car following. A few tips. If you are following staff cars. please understand that we may have to move rather quickly. Donât park too close and donât think us rude for not chatting. As with mounted staff, we might be on point or game spotting. Excess noise or exhaust fumes might inadvertently turn the quarry. It would be a wonderful idea to contact the hunt secây and let them know of your intentions. We have several seasoned car followers that will gladly take passengers. We do not have âWhoopie Wagonsâ. Please, in the interest of safety and community relations, unless you are a passenger, leave the flask home. It would be an embarrassment for any hunt to have a car follower DWIed for reckless driving. Some state laws also forbid open containers of alcohol. Sorry to be a âbuzz killâ, and I hope you will have
a delightful time on the road as a prelude to the hunt.
If you want to car follow, ride with an old salt who knows hounds and hunting.
Be a sponge. You will soak up quite a lot of information. Woodcraft, scent, hounds, the art of venerie.
If you ply these old salts with a picnic lunch you will be golden.
Old is relative. I really mean experienced.
Um⊠Have you thought about joining us in march at hunters rest? I think she has space at her place. Shes doing a whole weekend thing, and Iâve invited everyone to hunt with the foot pack on Sunday. Bassets!
Thank you everyone for the information.
I was just kiddinâ about the flask. Mine would have iced tea, anyway. Unsweetened, even.
I would WANT to go with an old salt, definitely. Iâm sure they would be a wealth of knowledge. I will contact TN Valley Hunt to inquire about the possibility.
I am very upset, JSwan, that my March calendar is quite full already-with work-related stuff. Nothing on the weekends, but these are 3-4 day overnight conferences. I believe that is the month for the COTH hunt?
OH-and Iâm on jury duty call until April. Why canât I just hibernate until April, or at least live in the barn?
Perhaps next year for the COTH/Hunterâs Rest outing.
I will regale George the Basset about Basset Packs.
Well do it again this fall. Well get you out fox hunting, by hook or by crook. Or by basset.
Sorry for typos neo luddites and iPads donât mix.
LOL
I suppose luddites are better than Philistines, or however the heck it is spelled, or even worseâŠKlingons!
Yes, Fall would be peachy. That would give me the whole summer to shape up myself, Clevie/TB mare, and evil pinto pony. Might even back ginormous PerchX. She has had a saddle on and was very ho hum about it. Now me on her backâŠthat might be a whole 'nuther story. Mud might be my friend in that instance.
Oh YippeeâŠa fall CotH expedition afoot already! If she doesnât check in here soon, send a PM to wateryglen, sheâs not only a hunting princess, but also a car following princess.
My husband had a terrific time car following in October.
And you absolutely must include time for the bassetsâŠtheyâre SOOO loveable! (I know, theyâre true hunting hounds, and I shouldnât be describing them as loveable, but I canât help myself.
I"m trying to convince DH we need more Bassets, but he ainât buyinâ it. (We have 8 dogs total). I need to quit looking at the county animal shelters every day.
I am looking forward to car following, Hinderella!
Sounds like you have a serious educational need to come foot basseting with us! Got to give your pack something to do that they will love. Plus think how much they will sleep afterwards! All of you will be lean and fit before you know it, since it is fun.
Tick tick tick
Thinking thinking
Lots oâ bassets
Lotâs oâ Cothers
Where is the pack located?
Yes you need flasks ⊠and its an amazing adventure.
I Road Whip at our Hunt & we have auctioned rides in the Hound
Truck at our annual Auction with success!
I warn the folks that we might not see action, as I really am a Whipper-In &
need to be at my point & not where the action might be! Itâs gratifying to hear
my visitor say âThatâs OK, I want to see what your job is.â And all their questions
on the actual hunting, hounds, the behind-the-scene action!
As far as Car Followers go, itâs great to see the interest & lots of them are retired
foxhunters & visiting family & friends!
A few things to think about if you car follow:
Please be aware of the rest of the drivers on the road that probably donât have
clue about whatâs going on out in the country-side.
We need to be very respectful of them:
- Pull off the road as far as you can to park
- Donât drive along at 25mph blocking the road, it just annoys the rest of traffic,
pull over & drive on the shoulder. - according to our Sherriff/Whip, it is technically illegal to pull off
the road except in an emergency, at least in New York, so consider that one!
He says to use your flashers----- - Lots of common sense will go a long way!

Check out the âinterest in ladies foxhunting clinicâ thread. There is lots of conversation about bassets and mounted hunting. Ashland Bassets are the pack we follow. They are based near Warrenton, Va. Fun group, foot following, so you can just park once in a safe spot. Great teas afterwards.
Come on up!
Come to Warrenton some saturday before the end of the season and join me! I donât know where you live soâŠPM me or something! You can stay overnight and go hunting w/my Ashland Bassets hunt on Sunday too! We donât need to wait for the hunting princesses weekendâŠwe can do any weekend! No horses needed!
Where is Meadowview anyway?!!
Hi WG,
I will pm you, but Meadowview is off of I-81 almost to the TN border. We are known down here for the Bristol Motor Speedway (yawn), the Coal Counties, and ahem, white lightninâ, which according to a âfriendâ :D:D is deadly smooth, and very tasty, esp when it is made from blackberries.
Oh, I would love to come up! Thanks for the invite!
Please pardon any misspellings-I have my bifocals on.
Iâll look forward to seeing you when you come up. Wateryglen will, I hope, share you!
Why, thank you, Whicker! How nice of you.
I have been a. without internet access since yesterday
b. out in the mud laying out my garden
c. working in the paddock removing fence
I had âhelpâ in the paddockâŠ
I will pm WG before my battery runs out.
