Recently had a cat have to have 17 teeth pulled. I’d been feeding a top quaility cat food but it does contain both carrageenan and garr gum. I’ve seen some bad things about carrageenan. Garr gum and xanthan gum apparently causes food to stick to the teeth which is not good for dental health. Looking around it is very hard to find a food that doesn’t contain any of these ingredients. Lotus cat food and Dr. Elsey clean protien. Is it worth the effort and expense to find foods that don’t contain either or am I being paranoid. And if I’m not being paranoid what else should I be on the alert for.
I went down that road a couple of years ago. It was really expensive to feed 5 cats with canned food that doesn’t have those ingredients. After talking to my vet I finally quit stressing about it. She said as long as I was feeding a low carb, high protein canned food all was good.
I do augment with a bit of raw food (one of my cats thinks I’m trying to poison him when offered raw) but it’s not their main diet.
Well the Dr Elsey is actually less than the Royal canin canned I’ve been feeding and the kibble is just a bit more expensive. The other one lotus is expensive but boy they love it so it is the treat food. Getting someone’s appetite back or when we are at a show.
I am thinking about going raw. Nee to get the supplementation down for that.
This is one of the sites I like for feline food reviews. I’m sure it’s not for everyone.
Well my Lotus just juicey pork made it. The Dr. Elsey didn’t but I couldn’t determine the reason why. It doesn’t contain any thing they didn’t like except perhaps ocean whitefish. Maybe too new?
