Cart for driving in sand

My Morgan and I have recently moved to Florida from New York. We are boarding at a stable with many areas to drive, but it is all sand. The roads are sand, with some areas being hard-packed and others are deeper (approx 8 inches of “fluffy” sand on the surface). I used a Meadowbrook at home, but I’m told my mare will struggle to pull this down here. Can I drive her with the Meadowbrook on the grassy areas, even though the ground is still very sandy?

What type of cart would you recommend for this type of footing? I have been told to get something with pneumatic tires. Is this correct? Any suggestions and places to buy a cart would be greatly appreciated!

Yep, pnuematic tires…the width will help the wheels from sinking.

Don’t get wire wheel carts, they’re crap and dangerous.

Yes, pneumatics! I’m in GA. The last barn i was in, even with my cheap bad wire spoked pneumatics i had to get off and push from behind the cart to help my pony get through some spots. Thank goodness he’s a good boy. Now i dont have pneumatics at my new barn, but my trails, though sandy soil, are covered with pine needles and with the exception of a few spots, my wheels do not sink.

If you need to keep it cheaper and dont care about looks, you can buy a better quality metal easy entry cart and put new wheels on them. I’ve got a thread on here somewhere about how my wire spoked wheels crushed and then my cart fell apart… So dont go wire spokes! You just never know what might happen!

I know some people have gotten motorcycle tires and put them on, you might have to put a new axle on the cart to do so if they do not line up.

Most all marathon carriages and wagonettes can come with optional pneumatic wheels if bought new (or found used) you are just looking at a possible jump in price depending on what you are looking to spend on a new cart. (I know the wagonettes at the auctions sell new for roughly 2-3k right now, a bit of a drive for you, but the Southern GA Carriage auction in Perry is coming up in May)

You could also contact some of the larger carriage dealers in the US and find out about ordering new wheels for whatever cart you end up with. They wouldnt come large enough to work on your meadowbrook i dont think.

Welcome to the great litter box of the world.

What part of Florida are you in? There are lots of places for driving in Central Florida.

You want some sort of light cart with pneumatic wheels. Don;t waste you time on bicycle type rims and wheels. They do not have the strength for trail driving.

The above link is a cart I purchased last fall. I love it for trail. It has u-springs and has a nice ride. Notice the really big rims and tires.

This was my woods cart for years. I put many many miles training and competiting in Competitive Trail driving. My husband converted the original wimpy bike tires and rims to motorcycle rims and tires without changing the axle.

You asked if you can drive your meadowbrooke on grassy areas. Yes. Depending on where, you may or may not sink or cut deep roots.

Meadowbrookes are traditionally a heavy cart. I would strongly urge you to find somethingk a lot lighter.

Russ Hardwick of Puddlejumper fame makes a very nice aluminum cart that can be fitted with the same wheels I have on the newer cart. It is called a Teetertotter. There are a couple of them being used in Compeititive distance now. He lives in Ocala. Check them out at

I didnt know any of the hardwick vehicles could come with pneumatics. Good to know!

I think that doing this is a grt experience for me especially.

If she’s at least 30 inches you can now you might want to wait until she is 3 to actually put a driver on her, because she is a mare, and don’t worry minis can pull up to 8 times .
