Case to Carry Epi-Pen while Riding?

I was recently diagnosed with a bee sting allergy, so I need to carry my Epi-Pen with me at all times while outdoors. I trail ride frequently, so I need something that can stay on me or be secured to an English saddle to hold the Epi-Pen.

I’ve looked into a few phone cases that can be secured to a leg, arm or boot, but I was curious to see if anyone else had a similar dilemma or any idea on how to solve it?

Thanks!

As a rider you have two problems and those are a living thing that might be getting stung at the same time you are and distance above the ground If you come off you could hit hard on the device and that might render it useless at the very moment you need it. So any container will have to be robust enough to take that punishment.

Carrying on the saddle would be a solution except that if your horse is getting stung at the same time your are you’ll likely get separated from it, and separated from your medication, again at a time when you can least afford it.

I found these. http://www.kozygo.ca/category_s/60.htm They don’t look real robust so I don’t know if they would work or not.

Here is a better idea. https://www.amazon.com/Carrier-Epipen-Insulin-Pen-Concealed/dp/B00BR041N4

Here are a number of leather pouch alternatives. Some of these folks look like home manufacturers. Contact one of them and see if they could make the pouch into a “shoulder holster” design. That would put it safely on your body. Make the pouch a bit oversize so you could wrap the pen in a thin layer of bubble wrap or some other cushioning material while inside the pouch.

If you talk to the maker ask them if the best way to orient the device is vertical, horizontal, or angled. My first impression would be angled but I’d have to think about it some before I made a final choice. The maker might be able to rig it such that you can adjust the way you carry to match your conformation and comfort.

I do some amateur leather work and this would be a fun and challenging project!

With a bit of imagination and talking to makers about your needs as a rider I’m sure you can come up with a viable solution. Good luck as you search.

Forgot to add, as I was looking about for pouches/cases I found this:

If this is a viable alternative to the Epi-Pen it would be an advantage to you in its smaller size. You could craft a much smaller case, suitable for carry one a regular belt.

I carry my epi-pen in my horn bag with my water bottle.

Since you want to keep it on your person, I would think that the sturdy plastic case that encases the epi-pen would keep it safe in the event that you made an unplanned saddle evacuation. For this reason, I would think that any case large enough would be ok.Have you thought about a fanny pack? I know it sounds less than appealing visually, but if you want to keep the pen with you, this might be a good way to go. I can honestly say that I’ve never landed on my back end when I’ve come off.

I wear a fishing vest. It is light weight, mesh on the back and not too hot. I carry my Epi-Pens(2), Benedryl, and phone in the pockets.

I have epi-pen pouches from this company:

I worked with them to slightly enlarge the single-pen pouch so that it will hold two epi-pens (as recommended by MD). Fits on my belt and I wear it all the time at home and riding.

These are great people and TOUGH products. Highly recommend. (I have no connection to the company.)

Bumping in case this info might be helpful to anyone else: the Horse Holster recently started selling a neoprene case made specifically for medical products (diabetes, allergies, asthma, etc). It can be secured to waistband, across body, or via a thigh or calf strap.

Vet wrap with strip of duct tape works in a pinch.

This is terrific! I drop my asthma inhaler in the indoor arena from time to time. And I’m a flip phone person. I have nerve damage in my right arm. This looks much better than what I’m using now.
