Caslick Removal

When do you do yours? I have a mare with a ETA of 2/12. I am thinking sometime next week (week beginning 1/13). Too early, too soon?

Edited to add - I just looked at the ultrasound and on the pic it says 2/3 to 2/5. She was AI’d and that date would be 2/12.

That sounds about right. I usually go about 30 days out.

I think thats a tad early. I generally have mine opened about 2-3 weeks out but Im sure lots do them a month out as well

In a pinch, Ive always had a sterile scalpel around and open them myself if I get caught by surprise but I can also understand some MO’s wouldnt be comfortable doing so.

How exciting! Good luck with your foaling!

We used to do about 2 weeks out.

We usually do them when they go into the foaling monitoring paddock… about 3 weeks prior to due date or when they start developing an udder. Be mindful that it is an open wound, and the body loves to heal itself. Plenty of open caslicks have turned into unopened caslicks by the time mares foaled out. Simply just checking the hind end every couple days to make sure the ends haven’t fibrosed back together will do the trick.
