I’d love to have an indoor cat, but recently discovered that I’m mildly allergic. Are there some cat breeds that are “hypoallergenic?” Does anyone have experience with cat allergies? Do they get worse over time?
I am extremely allergic to cats. I own three of them all 100% indoors. For the first couple of years I took allergy medicine every single day. Now I only get an allergy attack maybe once a week and only take allergy medicine if I get an attack. I vacuum all the time and keep my house dusted to try to be as hair free as possible.
Allergies typically get much better with repeat exposure. I was also highly allergic to horses in my younger years and I now after 10+ years I am no longer allergic to horses. I’ve only really had cats for about 4 years and my hope is that in a couple more years I wont be allergic to them anymore.
Sphinx and some of the Rex breeds are supposed to be hypoallergenic.
My mom always tested positive whenever they tested her, so was afraid that the double coated Chartreuse (sp?) like moggie I tried to adopt (she terrorized my old girl, so no joy) would cause issues when said kitty took residence there instead. Mom’s been fine going on 8 years now.
My husband is allergic, bless his heart, and both cats are always trying to sleep on his pillow. We’ve managed over the years by washing and brushing the cats regularly and cleaning well all the time. In fact, people who are allergic to cats often doubt that we have them in the house. My husband’s allergies have not gotten worse, but since he’s seen those hairless cats on TV he keeps threatening to shave mine.
Sneezing, etc
Thanks for your insight/input. I wish I had the fortitude to deal with shots, but think I’m more into avoidance! But I do like cats…
Hang out with a couple of different cats. One at a time, obviously.
They’re all different and some may not bother your allergies as much as others. It’s the dander that causes problems and one may not have as much as another.
I’ve also read that bathing them regularly helps, as well as grooming, good diet with Omega 3’s and using wipes.
I have a devon rex, and she’s supposed to be hypoallergenic. Her hair coat is not the typical cat fur and she doesn’t shed as much as the others. She does look kinda funny but is a great cat overall.
I grew up with cats but developed some allergies when I went to college, got her right after I graduated and didn’t have any issues with her. Now we have her and 2 other cats. Love my kitties!!
