Cat behavior change after illness

Last week my cat was vomiting and stopped eating. He is usually a cat that loves his canned food and never misses a meal, so I was very concerned. I took him to the regular vet and they did a barium x-ray to make sure there was no blockage. They sent him home with anti-nausea meds and said if on Monday he still isn’t eating we would need to get lab work. Of course this is a Friday and they are closed for the weekend. Sunday comes around and he seems to be doing worse and seems dehydrated so we take him to the emergency clinic. Blood work comes back normal but they do a urine analysis and he has a very bad urinary tract infection. They give him some fluids and send us home with an antibiotic. Side note: I’m a bit frustrated with the regular vet because when the cat was there Friday I explicitly asked if it could be a UTI since he has had them before and they said no and didn’t even test.

But anyway, he has been on the antibiotic since Sunday and is starting to eat again. Not with the same passion as before, but at least he is eating and drinking. But he still doesn’t seem himself. He is usually a very overly affectionate cat–always needs to be in the same room as my husband or I, loves to be held, will beg to be picked up, sleeps in bed with us on the pillow between my husband and I. But he doesn’t like being held anymore. He has been spending time under the bed which he never does or just sleeping on the cat tree. He is also usually a very playful cat and loves chasing our other cat and wrestling but he hasn’t been doing that either. It just seems like he is unhappy and tired now which makes me sad.

I’m not sure if he is still not feeling well from the UTI. Or maybe the antibiotic is making him feel this way? Or maybe he is just mad at us because we are forcing medication down his throat twice a day? Anyone have any experience with this? Did your cat eventually return to their normal personality? I miss my little buddy :frowning:

Entirely possible he’s just still not feeling great, and maybe a little resentful of the antibiotics. If that’s the case, once he really starts to feel better, he’ll be back to his old self. They do forgive pilling (eventually )

But…How long was he not eating? Did he lose much weight? There is a liver condition that can kick in when they go anorexic, especially if they drop weight quickly. That would be an emergency situation, not a wait and see kind of thing. Here is an article…if that’ s matching up to what you’re seeing, best to get back into the vet.

He’s been ill and thrown pillar to post with strange people doing strange and uncomfortable things to him plus the antibiotic could be making him sluggish. A bad UTI can be painful and make him tired as well. Give him a bit more time to bounce back and if he isn’t his old self soon do a follow up with a vet.

Hope he feels better and is back to being your huggable little buddy soon.

Apparently all I needed to do was post about him on a public forum haha! Last night when I got home from work he greeting me at the front door and was talking away like his usual self. Then he chowed down on a can of food and sat my lap purring while we watched a movie. He slept in bed with us again last night too!

His appetite is also back enough that I can put the antibiotic in a pill pocket and he will eat it, meaning my husband doesn’t have to hold him down while I pill him anymore! I think I needed to just be patient and give the antibiotics time to work and let him rest up.

Yep, give him time. Sounds like he’s on the mend, but remember antibiotics can make em feel crappy, plus, they aren’t used to going outside, yet alone the car ride, then the vets.
Thinking good thoughts!

Glad he’s feeling better!

Good update ~ waiting at the door … with a big appetite … nice !

Jingles & AO for your dear boy ~

Great news!!! So scary when they are off from their usual selves!
