Cat Calming Devices and Chemicals?

What works for your kitties? I have tried Zylkene but it doesn’t work. Feliway is expensive, and from what I’ve read it has only about a 50-50 success rate. Not good enough for me to invest in the diffuser. I read about the Sentry Calming Collar but the top review on Amazon says it is so poorly designed and hard to adjust that a cat can easily get it caught in their mouth.

What about a calming spray? I’ve seen Feliway and Naturvet (not familiar with this brand but Chewy carries its products so maybe it’s a good brand?).

This is for my 19yo kitty who has gone back to early-morning yowling and prowling. I asked our vet about Prozac but apparently she’s too old for it. She seems fine all day long. It’s just that about 2:00 - 4:00 a.m. she gets really loud and seems really stressed. And she is really stressing me out too. Our vet is on board, just doesn’t have any more suggestions for this elderly kitty.

I don’t want to discourage you, but I haven’t found any that actually work. I’ve tried Feliway (both the collar and the diffuser) and Rescue Remedy on several different foster cats, and I haven’t noticed a difference.

Maybe a sedative that will last through the night?

I would personally try a Feliway plug in, and I would also consider asking about giving Gabapentin before bedtime. I have a cat that has that weird hyperesthesia syndrome that vocalizes and gets aggressive at night and if he’s too bad I give him a dose of gabapentin and he’s nowhere near as obnoxious. A Feliway diffuser isn’t that expensive and it could really help in my opinion.

I had good results with the lavender-scented calming collars they sell at Petsmart (can’t remember who made them). They look like a purple flea collar and the cats didn’t mind them at all.

I used them for a move to a new house.

They aren’t break-away, though, so I kept them loose enough to slip out of if necessary.

Have you considered doing a consult with a Vet. Behaviorist? www.dacvb.org/about/member-directory/

It is often possible to do phone consult if there is not one close enough to drive to. Maybe ask your vet for a reco?

I didn’t have any luck with the lavender collars or the plug ins but I was dealing with a different set of behavior.
