Cat food recommendations

He looks handsome, healthy and happy!

the food my cat likes best is Purina Naturals.
I generally grab a small bag of whatever is at the store I am at.
The cheap Aldi food was so-so. the grain free more of a ‘Mother! How could you!’ the kibble is tiny.
Temptations is well liked to a point. Nine Lives is take it or leave it. And the current round of Nutrish (also small kibble) is not a hit either.
I am probably terrible, but I have an odd mix of catfood, wet and dry, and grab usually whatever is on top (can wise). The kibble is out all day, for the dreadful little nagging hunger between feedings. I admire you guys who can feed once in the morning. My crew (down to one dog and one cat) takes umbrage to such abuse.

Do you know the reasoning for recommending against BB or Taste of the Wild? Curious.

There’s some knowledgeable cat
Expert that had a list of healthy vs. not healthy cat foods and BB
And TOTW were both on the not
Healthy, poor quality list.

Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild were both linked to DCM (cardiac issues) in dogs. The FDA backed off after getting fewer reports, which also may be because some of these foods were reformulated. In particular there were suspicions that peas or lentils in quantity might be the issue.

My vet friend would say (even before the DCM data came out) that these brands do not (or at least did not when they started) have nutritionists on staff and also often do not make their own food - meaning that they are trusting some other entity to follow their specifications. There are issues with some of those third party made foods not actually containing what’s on the ingredient list (and some are iffy with food safety). That’s past the issue of, are the intended ingredients good choices.

Basically she’d say that those companies were founded on marketing, not what is on good for animals.

I mean, if you found a pet food company, and you’re not expert in nutrition and not making it yourself, what exactly is your value add? Just the packaging?

My cat’s vet (a different person) and I had a fun moment when she asked if my cat liked chicken or fish better, and I said, “Honestly, I think he likes mouse flavor, but I guess that didn’t pass the consumer marketing screen.” I guess “Now with 100% real mouse” just doesn’t resonate the same way.

I think at one point I tried TOTW, the resounding reaction from the target audience was ‘Nope’
The most expensive food is that the animals won’t eat.

So true especially with our finicky feline friends!! Thankfully they’re so cute and sweet that I don’t mind catering to them

I ended up buying Go! from Chewy. I’d love to try the new Science Diet GI Biome but of course its a prescription. One of my girls may have an anal gland impaction now so if I take her to the vet i guess I can see about trying it.

Have your cats given the GO! the taste test yet? Mine LOVE it a bit too much LOL, I’m having to LIMIT the amount offered now. We are going with SMALL amounts a number of times a day. Because of the expanding waistlines happening here. The most recent bag we bought was the BIG bag, which had to be ordered in specially. It’s a bit cheaper to buy the bigger bag, and we are pretty much snowed in here for a while now anyway. Don’t want to run out.

I should get it today and will let you know how they like it. Hopefully as much as your crew does.

When my male cat had urinary issues, I started using this food, Wysong Uretic Dry Cat Food (https://www.chewy.com/dp/55339). He never had issues again after the switch. It’s about 20 bucks for a five pound bag, so not cheap, but not as bad as the RX cat food.

boy, that is so true! What is particularly maddening, is finding something they like. Right now they have friskee’s kibble, but they have decided after eating it for years and years, eh, we don’t want that now. I blanch at paying some of these prices but what is maddening is when I buy something different, (Blue Buffalo), for the dog, he wolfed it down, till I bought a second bag. eh I don’t want it now. I would try to feed them whatever they want if they would want it for longer than a week.

They eat the Royal Canin urinary formula (non-prescription) okay. It’s not their top favorite so I leave it out to munch on, but looking for that winner that they can have as a staple.

This is the urinary formula I use. I could use a better contender than this one though too, probably :grimacing:

Yeah, that’s pretty expensive! At least most cats take a while to eat a bag. My cat did like the Wysong.

The problem I usually have with a lot of these prescription diets or urinary diets is that the number one ingredient is corn. Royal Canin’s top ingredient is corn, which to me is a filler. I feel like I’m getting cheated with ingredients, yet still paying a high price. Royal Canin’s first ingredients are: Corn, wheat gluten, chicken meal, brewers rice, corn gluten meal, wheat, chicken fat, natural flavors, rice hulls

Compared to the Wysong, which has: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Potato Protein, Brown Rice, Peas, Flaxseeds, Meat Protein Isolate, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Sesame Seeds, Dried Cheese, Dried Whey Protein Concentrate, Dried Natural Meat Broth as the first ingredients.

I’m not an expert by any means, so it could mean nothing. But I felt better with the Wysong.

isn’t that funny? Cats are carnivores. Dogs can eat anything, but cats need meat. I read quite a while ago to bypass anything with corn in the first five products. But of course, as people crave sugar, cats seem to like corn.

Yep, exactly! I was pretty picky about my cat’s food. Seems like some of these companies make SO much money on prescription diets, and they’re no better than the cheap stuff – in my uneducated opinion, I’ll have to add.

I don’t feed it anymore, but my two cats that lived the longest, Lark and his sister Muff, lived to be 19 and 20 ate NOTHING but Meow Mix.

Long live the inexpensive foods! (I had some on MM as well. )

Okay, I was curious about the ingredients in Meow Mix. Here are the top couple of ingredients:

Whole Ground Corn, Soybean Meal, Chicken By-product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Beef Tallow (preserved With Mixed Tocopherols), Animal Digest, Turkey By-product Meal, Salmon Meal, Ocean Fish Meal.

Maybe not so different from the Rx diets.

I was extraordinarily particular about my last cat’s food and spent a lot on high quality can food that he didn’t always eat, supplemented with the “best” kibble I could get only because I couldn’t get him to always eat a wet-only diet.

When he passed, I unexpectedly got two wormy, flea-ridden kittens from a student. Funds were tight, especially considering they needed all their vaccines and neutered. They were eating dollar store dry cat food, so I figured Purina One kibble + cans of grocery store wet food were a slight improvement.

When I felt like my finances had recovered, I figured it was time to get them on a ”better” all wet diet. I picked up some Tiki Cat and Weuva. They wouldn’t touch it.

So, here we are. Ironically, the cats’ weight, coats, and appetite are glorious. They are really in good shape. Just hoping I’m not setting myself up for future problems, but at the moment, no complaints.
